Wilhemi to Resign Feb. 25

Democrats are seeking his replacement.

State Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi, D-43, has reportedly turned in his letter of resignation, saying he will step down Feb. 25.

The announcement means a three-member committee has until March 25 to name his replacement.

In January, Wilhelmi said he intended to step down after accepting a job with the Illinois Hospital Association, where he will serve as senior vice president of government relations.

Wilhelmi will stay on March 20 ballot

Because election ballots have already been printed, it is too late to remove Wilhelmi’s name from the March 20 ballot.

Last week, Grosskopf said in addition to his letter or resignation, Wilhelmi will have to submit a letter formally rejecting the Democratic party nomination following the March 20 primary.

It will be up to Grosskopf and DuPage County Democratic Party Chair Robert Peickert to determine who will show up on the November general election ballot.

Wilhelmi’s replacement could ultimlately become the Democratic nominee, provided he or she lives within the new 43rd District boundaries, which now extend into DuPage County.
