With snow falling since this morning and temperatures right on the freezing mark, streets are slushy and, in some spots, a little treacherous.
Update/3:15 p.m. Tuesday: The winter storm watch has been changed to a winter weather advisory, which is in effect until 9 p.m. Expect a combination of rain, snow and sleet this afternoon and evening before the storm passes through our area. The National Weather Service says we could get between three and five inches total, and that the situation will be exacerbated by winds clocking in at as high as 35 mph. With temperatures right at the freezing mark, wet snow has been falling fairly consistently since later morning and is causing some roads to be predictably slippery. We asked our Facebook readers about what they were seeing, and here's what they reported... Original story posted Monday afternoon: For the second time in less than a week…

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather alert, warning of an unknown amount of accumulation and gusting winds that could be as high as 50 mph.
So, you thought we might skate through winter with fall-like temperatures and rainy days? Snap out of it! We live in the Chicago suburbs, for heaven's sake, and that means it's eventually going to snow. And if the most recent National Weather Service forecast for the Joliet area proves accurate, "eventually" arrives Thursday. There's an 100 percent chance of morning rain that day turning to afternoon snow, according to the Tuesday morning weather service forecast. A "special weather statement" said: "While there remains quite a bit of uncertainty on snowfall duration and amounts, one aspect that looks highly likely is that the west-northwest winds will become strong on Thursday afternoon and evening. Gusts should be up to 40 to 50 mph, and…

After Wednesday's mild weather, expect temperatures to plunge as the area sees moderate to heavy show through Thursday.
After unseasonably mild weather this winter, Thursday's snow storm may come as a shock. While Wednesday will continue to be mild and dry, an arctic front is expected to come through the area Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service. A possible rain-snow mix will transition to all snow by Thursday morning as temperatures fall through the 20s. Two inches to five inches of snow can be expected across northeastern Illinois. Moderate to heavy snow and possible wind gusts of 30 mph will make for a hazardous Thursday morning commute, according to the NWS. Visibility may be reduced to a half-mile or less at times. The Thursday evening commute will also be hazardous, and temperatures are expected to drop between 10 and 15 …

Tuesday night’s snowstorm could be on par with record-setting snowfalls of 21.6 inches, seen in 1999, and Chicago’s all-time heaviest snowfall in 1967.
The blizzard scheduled to hit the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon could rival the worst snowstorms in history, according to the National Weather Service in Romeoville. A blizzard warning will be in effect for the Romeoville area from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday, said meteorologist Charles Mott, and the early estimates of up to 18 inches of accumulation may be on the conservative side. “Probably the best way to put it is 18 inches-plus,” Mott said, adding the impending blizzard is not your typical snowstorm. “This is very unusual,” he said. “This is right up there with the biggest snowstorms of all time.” That includes the Chicago area’s biggest blizzard ever, which hit on Jan. 26 and 27, 1967. That storm dumped 23 inches of snow on …
The “Ready America” website offers tips on how to prepare for bad weather and other emergencies.
In a blizzard warning released Sunday, the National Weather Service characterized the coming storm as “possibly life threatening” with “nearly impossible travel conditions.” Local officials agree. The village is urging residents to stay put, as white-out conditions are expected at times on Tuesday night, and the Illinois Department of Transportation is advising residents to forego any non-essential travel. In a release issued Monday night, the village urged anyone who must travel to carry a winter survival kit. The release also encouraged residents to check on elderly or disabled neighbors, or contact the Romeoville Police Department’s non-emergency line at 815-886-7219. And watch where you park: during a snowfall of two inches or more, …

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, residents can expect three to five inches of snow starting at around midnight.
Get out those shovels. After Midwesterners were treated to a warmer-than-usual fall, winter is here, and the first snowstorm of the year is on its way. Meteorologist Charles Mott of the National Weather Service in Romeoville said a winter weather advisory will be in effect for 24 hours, starting at midnight. After this week's light dusting of snow, residents can expect to see even more of the white stuff, he added. "We're looking at about three to five inches," Mott said. The advisory is in effect for areas including Will, DuPage, Kendall, LaSalle, Kankakee and Grundy counties, with snow expected to begin just before midnight in the western and northwestern counties, moving east before it hits the Chicago area between 1 and 3 a.m. Snow-…

Braidwood road crews are doing a wonderful job. Been out plowing since early this morning. Street are clear but wet so I am sure they will freeze this evening when it gets dark and the temps drop. Hopefully they spred enough salt when plowing that it really won't freeze to bad. Stay safe everyone!   more ›
