Mock-Crash Drives Home the Realities of Drunken Driving
Staged the morning before prom, the accident was organized by the RHS branch of SADD, local police and fire.
When Romeoville High School students, parents and staff arrived at school Friday morning, they witnessed all sorts of emergency equipment tending to a mock two-car accident caused by a drunk driver. The demonstration, put together by the RHS Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the Romeoville police and fire departments and Pfeiffer Towing, took place the morning of the RHS prom to emphasize to students the dangers of drinking and driving. The accident was set up in the field next to the main entrance to RHS so everyone arriving by car or by bus could witness what was happening as they came to school.

Patch Poll: How Much Will You Spend on Prom?
Midwestern families will spend an average of $696, a survey says. How does that compare with your experience?
The dress. The tux. The corsage. The prom. That may have been sufficient to describe this high school ritual of passage in the past. But today, add the spray tan, the manicure and pedicure, the limo, the pre-prom party, the after-prom cruise on Lake Michigan. The cost. And in Romeoville, prom is coming up fast; RHS' big event is set for May 11. Visa Inc. has released a national survey that shows when it comes to high school proms, Americans appear to be willing to spend ever increasing amounts. American families who have teenagers will spend an average of $1,078 each on the prom this year, a 33.6% boost over the $807 spent in 2011, according to the survey. Pre-Prom Crash Scene a Wake-up Call for Teens
Romeoville police and firefighters teamed with members of Students Against Destructive Decisions to stage a fatal crash Friday near RHS.
Romeoville police and firefighters were there at 6 a.m. to set the scene: A tragic accident that claimed that lives of two teens, injured several of their friends and landed another in jail. While the pre-prom demonstration was make-believe, the scenario plays out all too often in real life. “The whole point of this is to save lives,” Romeoville High School’s school resource officer Det. Kelley Henson told teens who gathered early Friday to play the roles of the driver, victims and shocked bystanders. The crash was staged near the Taylor Road entrance to RHS, giving students an eyeful as they arrived at school.
