Students from three of the district's four high school earned top honors at the competition last month at Eastern Illinois University.
Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: Four students from Plainfield East and South high schools and Plainfield High School – Central Campus earned top honors at the 2013 Illinois High School Association’s state journalism competition. The event was held April 26 at Eastern Illinois University. The students were among 10 District 202 students to qualify for the completion. These students also qualified for State but did not place:

Tim Albores will start his new role next school year.
Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: Plainfield Academy Assistant Principal Tim Albores will take a new position next school year as the Student Services department’s new assistant director. The District 202 Board of Education approved naming Albores to the post at its regular meeting on May 13, 2013. Albores will replace current assistant director Joe Schimmel, who is resigning after a year in the role. “We are very excited to be bringing Tim to the district office,” said Mina Griffith, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services. “He has really proven his leadership abilities in his time at Plainfield Academy and we are confident he is going to do an excellent job serving all 30 of our schools,” she said. Teens from three of District 202's four high schools will send girls to the state event in Charleston.
Plainfield School District 202 will be well represented this weekend at the Illinois High School Association Girls State Track Meet this weekend at O'Brien Stadium in St. Charles. Three of the four high schools in the district will send qualifiers to the meet. The District 202 Board of Education approved appointing Sandra Garner as the new principal at Grand Prairie Elementary, and Dr. Tammy Sroczynski will take over as principal at Freedom Elementary. “We are confident that Sandra and Tammy will do an excellent job continuing the fine work that has been done at these schools by their predecessors,” said Mark Heiss, director for elementary administration and personnel. Board set to vote next month on policy that would bar students from activities, big events if fees are delinquent.
Should students pay to play? Plainfield school board members are scheduled to vote May 28 on a policy that would require District 202 students to pay all their fees in full or be current on fee payment plans to participate in athletics or certain important events. The proposal is aimed at getting families to make good on unpaid fees. When the proposal was first suggested in January, the district was already looking at more than $172,000 in unpaid athletic fees from the start of the 2012-13 school year, according to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Angie Smith. After a snow day and flood-related school closures, students will have to return for two extra days this month.
It's finally starting to feel like summer, but the school year isn’t over for District 202 students — and just got longer. In March, a snow day prompted the board to extend the school year by a day and a half. After two flood-related school closures in April, the board has again voted to push back the last day of school. Now, students and teachers will have to return after Memorial Day for a full day of school on Tuesday, May 28, plus another full day on Wednesday, May 29. The last day of school will be a half-day on May 30. The additional days aren't optional — by law, all Illinois school districts must have at least 176 instructional school days per year. Two outgoing Plainfield School District 202 Board of Education members bid farewell Tuesday as two brand-new board members were sworn in. With incumbents Rod Westfall and Michelle Smith rejoining the board, new members Bill Slabich Jr. and Bill Dargan officially became part of the school board. They join current members Kevin Kirberg, Greg Nichols and board president Roger Bonuchi. Ralph “Butch” LaFido, a longtime volunteer with the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry received the Ira Jones Memorial Award for his exemplary service to the Plainfield area. Most of those teachers work a little over 9 months, get almost full paid benefits for 12, and pay very little into their pensions. So take the salary and add the perks and tell me they don;t do OK.   more ›
