Non-personnel cuts and additional revenue has reduced a once-anticipated $8.9 million operating fund deficit down to $1.8 million.
Plainfield School District 202 administrators have a clearer picture of the 2012-13 budget, which now projects a $1.8 million deficit, district officials said Monday. The District 202 board adopted the budget in September with a projected $8.9 million operating fund deficit. While the board was required by law to file a budget in September, it also knew that work needed to be done to reduce the deficit and an amended budget will be filed this winter. The district was able to save about $5.2 million in non-personnel cuts, Angela Smith, assistant superintendent of business and operations, said. The biggest reduction – saving about $3 million – came by eliminating about 200 vacant teaching, administrative and support positions that were kept …

The change lowers the number of high school deans and guidance counselors in District 202 under the new plan adopted Monday.
The Plainfield School District 202 school board on Monday made some slight adjustments to the district’s student to staffing ratios based on Supt. John Harper’s recommendations. Staffing changes will go into effect for the 2013-14 school year. Harper said the change could mean layoffs, but it's too early to tell. Whether job cuts are in the future will depend on final enrollment numbers for next school year and, ultimately, the decision will rest with the board of educaton. On Monday, board members voted to lower to ratio of guidance counselors to students at the high school level from one guidance counselor per 375 students to one guidance counselor for every 350 students while raising the ratio of students to deans. School board members want to see what kind of non-personnel cuts can be made and what impact those cuts will have on students.
Plainfield School District 202 board members have big budgetary decisions to make in the coming months. On the one hand, the district is expected to see a roughly $7.8 million surplus from the 2011-12 budget thanks to more efficient transportation routes, decreased utility bills and other cost-control measures. An audit, which will determine the exact surplus, is scheduled to begin next month, but district officials said the revenues should exceed expenses by between $7 million and $8 million. On the other hand, the district is anticipating an $8.1 million deficit in the upcoming 2012-13 budget. Superintendent. John Harper said at a special school board meeting on Monday that the school board needs to decide if it is willing to adopt a …
