Ride Around Town Program a Hit with Local Seniors

Village offers door-to-door transportation three days per week.

She knows their schedules by heart. One day, they might need a ride to Wal-Mart. The next, it may be a doctor's appointment or a group trip to the bowling alley. Kathy Spiewak is one of two bus drivers for the Village of Romeoville's Ride Around Town program, which provides low-cost transportation for Romeoville residents in and around the village. The village's parks and recreation department's two 12-person buses shuttle riders to and from their destinations, according to Superintendent of Recreation Colleen O'Connell. Light Up the Holidays with Festival, Winter Wonderland

The parks and recreation department will host the annual Christmas tree-lighting festival and Winter Wonderland Dec. 3.

The village will usher in the holiday season Friday with its annual Christmas tree lighting and Winter Wonderland. The holiday fun gets under way as staff flips the switch to illuminate the twinkling lights on the village's 30-foot-tall spruce tree at 6 p.m. in front of the Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road. "Hopefully, the weather won't be quite as brutal as it was last year," said village trustee Linda Palmiter. But even the coldest winter weather isn't likely to keep residents away from the annual celebration, she noted. "It's really worth coming out," Palmiter said, adding past events have been well attended. Grant Could Fund Park Project

Program would help pay for $1.5 million redevelopment at former village hall site.

The former village hall site could get a $1.5 million upgrade if the village is successful in its bid to secure an Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant. The old village hall was razed after staff moved into the new municipal center on Romeo Road, but the adjacent Murphy Park, 13 Montrose Dr., could be in line for a major redevelopment. Currently, the park is home to the existing veterans memorial and Safety Town, a kid-sized village complete with a railroad station. At a Nov. 18 village board meeting, trustees gave Kelly Rajzer, director of Parks and Recreation, the go-ahead to submit an application for a PARC (Park and Recreational Facility Construction) Grant that could reimburse the village for up to 75 percent of the cost …
