State Sen. Wilhelmi Says He'll No Longer Offer Legislative Scholarships

Lawmakers can award eight one-year waivers, four two-year waivers, or two four-year waivers each year.

Illinois State Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi, D-Joliet, has announced he will no longer participate in the controversial Legislative Tuition Waiver Program. According to an Associated Press report, nearly half of the members of state lawmakers have chosen not to participate in a program, which lets legislators waive state college tuition for selected students in their districts. Lawmakers can award eight one-year waivers, four two-year waivers, or two four-year waivers each year.  "For the past several months, I have been debating whether to continue awarding legislative scholarships to college-bound students who live in the 43rd District," Wilhelmi said in a release. "In the end, I decided that the problems with the program outweigh its benefits." …

Fabby Williams to Resign as Bolingbrook High School Principal

Fabby Williams plans to resign after completing his first year on the job.

After just more than six months on the job, Bolingbrook High School principal Fabby Williams has decided to resign, school officials said Friday. Williams will complete the remainder of the school year and vacate his position effective June 30. Valley View Superintendent James Mitchem received official word from Williams Friday and wished him the best. "Valley View School District has received a communication from Principal  Fabby Williams indicating his intention to voluntarily resign his position as principal of Bolingbrook High School effective June 30, 2012," Mitchem said in a statement. I am senior at Northeast High School which Fabby is the current principal. I feel as if he is just trying to prevent his past from becoming a repeat, but the way he treats us as students is only going to lead down the same road. Bolingbrook Home Finishes Third in Deck the House Contest

The Frohns finished in third place out of 24 national finalists.

The Bolingbrook home that was one of 24 national finalists in Patch's Deck the House contest finished in third place, according to numbers released by Patch Monday evening. The Frohns household finished with 3,670 votes total. That was 8,486 votes behind the grand prize place winner, Kristy Powell of Davis, CA, who received 12,156 votes. Powell won $100,000 for her local school district as part of the grand prize. Police: Romeoville Man Had Sex With 14-Year-Old Girl Near Bolingbrook School

A 29-year-old Romeoville man lied about his age after allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl near Tibbott Elementary School in Bolingbrook.

A 29-year-old Romeoville man is in jail after Bolingbrook police said he was caught having sex with a 14-year-old girl near a local school on Sunday. Hoa Van Nguyen, 29, of the 100 block of Arcadia in Romeoville, is being charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault for his part in the incident, which occured on the 500 block of Gary Drive just before 3 p.m. According to police, officers received a phone call about two subjects possibly having sex in a gold car near the baseball fields of Tibbott Elementary School. Upon arrival, police found two people putting their clothes back on near a gold Honda Accord along the access road just east of the school. Initially, police said, Nguyen said he was 17 years old. State Rep. McAsey, Citizens Utility Board to Host Clinics on Phone Bill Savings

CUB study shows Illinois residents overspend by more than $1 billion each year on their phone bills.

Own a cell phone? You're likely part of the group of Illinois residents that the Citizens Utility Board says is collectively wasting $1 billion each year. CUB and State Rep. Emily McAsey are hoping to change that. The pair are partnering to host free clinics Jan. 16 at the White Oak Library District's Lockport branch (121 E. 8th St.) and Jan. 18 at the Levy Senior Center that will show residents how to save big by making just a few simple changes to their phone bills. Valley View Students Back to School Today

Students to begin second round of MAP testing within the next month.

Valley View School District 365U students return to the classroom today after a 15 day winter break. Almost immediately they'll be thrown back into the swing of things. According to the district's website, the second round of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) can begin anytime beginning Thursday.  Valley View has spent nearly $160,000 on the new student assessment tool that administrators say will help teachers better gauge student achievement and determine appropriate instructional levels.
