The Lewis University History Center collection features almost 500 historic images of the Lockport area and the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Representing the work of almost three years, Lewis University student interns worked closely with university librarians and staff to scan and identify the 35mm slides. “The majority of images are from Lockport, showing businesses, residences, parks, community activities, and the I&M Canal. Most date from the 1970s through the 1990s,” Stefany Drabes described. The history major has worked for the last six months as a paid intern under a grant from the Gaylord …

Ray Klump, a Lewis University professor and computer expert, offers these tips to avoid problems while online shopping.
So, you plan on doing a little shopping from your desk on the day that's unofficially been labeled Cyber Monday. Not a bad way to avoid the crowds and take a pass on circling the mall lot looking for a parking place and to avoid the lines at the registers as you try to make purchases, but there are pitfalls, too, says Dr. Ray Klump, Lewis University's director of the master of science in information security program. If you want to be safe, Klump offers these tips: 1. Make sure your computer's operating system, antivirus and anti-spyware software, and web browsers are up-to-date. Malware, such as viruses and rootkits, make their way into your system by taking advantage of vulnerabilities. Software vendors are constantly upgrading their …

The money will be used to gather water into a 200,000-gallon tank for use in campus irrigation and cooling tower systems.
This story was submitted by Lewis University: Through a pass through mini-grants program sponsored by Hanson Material Service, Midwest Generation and ComEd, Lewis University has received a $65,000 grant for a rainwater collection system. The collection system gathers water and stores it in a 200,000-gallon tank previously provided by the Romeoville municipal water system. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2013. The collected rainwater will be used for campus irrigation or cooling towers. The new rainwater collection system will preserve natural water systems since it will reduce Lewis’ use of a well for irrigation purposes. The system will also reduce the use of salt for softening water used for the cooling towers since the…

Romeoville police say Lewis University student Jamie Olson took steps to conceal her involvement in the suspected heroin death of her friend.
A 20-year-old Frankfort woman died of a drug overdose while at a Lewis University dorm this weekend, and the friend with whom she was staying has been arrested for trying to conceal her role in the death, Romeoville police said Monday. Anna Marinier was found dead at Fitzpatrick Hall at about 11:10 a.m. Sunday, Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said. Although toxicology tests are still pending, it's suspected she overdosed on heroin, he said. Her friend, Jamie Olson, 21, of 9125 Letterkenny, Tinley Park, was arrested Sunday night on a felony charge of obstruction of justice and booked into the Will County jail. Citing the "ongoing investigation," Lucchesi declined to disclose what Olson did in terms of obstructing the case …

Student Nataly Toubassi, a graduate of Bethlehem University, attended Lewis' annual tree lighting ceremony and discussed life in her homeland.
For Nataly Toubassi, the Christmas lighting ceremony at Lewis University Monday was bittersweet. Angelic voices of the choir resounded in the twilight next to bare trees adorned with twinkling lights -- a stark contrast to her Jerusalem homeland that is torn apart in war. Toubassi, a graduate of Bethlehem University, has been studying at Lewis University in Romeoville for the past three months through a unique partnership the universities share. Both schools are administered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, based on the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, and Bethlehem University is the only Catholic university in the Palestinian land. Since 1985, the two universities have collaborated to send Bethlehem graduates to Lewis to …
