Video from the fight shows a case of self-defense in which Jericho Parker was knifed after he attacked Tyree Parker from behind, Joliet Cmdr. Brian Benton said.
Update/1:05 p.m. Tuesday: No charges will be filed against the man accused of stabbing Jericho Parker to death because the man acted in self-defense, Joliet Police Cmdr. Brian Benton said. Tyree Crawford, 17, had been arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery because of his role in the fatal fight Monday night in the parking lot of the S & T Food Mart, 124 Richards St., but charges were dropped after the Will County State's Attorney's Office reviewed video of the incident. That video shows Parker as the "aggressor" in the fight and that Crawford had been walking away when Parker grabbed him from behind, prompting Crawford to pull out a knife and stab him once, Benton said. The decision does not mean charges …

The 43-year-old man, stabbed multiple times sometime between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, has been identified as Jarrod W. Marks.
The man found stabbed to death near Bicentennial Park had been seen earlier in the evening drinking in a nearby parking lot, and now Joliet police are hoping to track down the people he was with, Cmdr. Brian Benton said. Jarrod W. Marks, 43, originally from South Dakota, had been living with relatives in Joliet for the last few weeks, Benton said. Huge quantities of blood were found inside and out of the victim's 118 5th Ave. home, which she shared with son, who allegedly killed her, according to Joliet police.

Brian Benton said. Charles McCullum was charged with first-degree murder Thursday in connection with the attack. The body of Jeanie Parker, 54, has not yet been recovered and a search of the river between the Jefferson and McDonough street bridges continues, Benton said. McCullum confessed to police that he stabbed his mother numerous times in the 118 Fifth Ave. home they shared after becoming enraged during an argument. No details on what the fight was about were available, but the pair had a "history of conflict," Benton said. Neighbors alerted police to …

Joliet police say an armed robber used his weapon to strike his victim's head and relieved him of a cell phone, car keys and $100.
An armed bandit, angered when his victim told him he didn't have a wallet, struck the man with a gun, took his cell phone and car keys, and then retrieved the man's cash and IDs from inside his vehicle, Joliet police said. The incident took place at about noon Monday in the 1000 block of Woodruff, near a small food store to which the 53-year-old Joliet man was going, Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Before he reached the store, however, a man in his 20s wearing a black hoodie and pants approached him and demanded he give him his wallet, Demick said. The victim responded that he didn't have one, prompting the suspect to hit him in the head with the butt of the gun, he said. The victim fell to the ground, and the robber confiscated his keys and phone…

Joliet police, using underage volunteers, test clerks to see if they will break the law and sell tobacco products to teens.
Joliet police conducted a cigarette enforcement check Tuesday -- the second in four days -- and charged 10 more clerks with selling tobacco to minors, report show. Per state law, the police have to check every business with tobacco products once a year to ensure they're not selling cigarettes to underage smokers. There are more than 130 businesses in Joliet that sell tobacco-related items. The enforcement involves sending a minor into a store to see if the clerk will sell him cigarettes. The first was conducted Friday and 10 clerks were cited for breaking the law. The same number were issued compliance tickets Tuesday. Here are the names of those who were cited and the stores for whom they work: DON'T MISS THE LATEST JOLIET NEWS. SUBSCRIBE…

Joliet police conducted a check to determine if stores were selling tobacco to underage patrons, and found 10 businesses where employees broke the law.
The Joliet Police Department cited clerks in 10 stores for selling tobacco to minors in a compliance enforcement conducted Friday. Joliet Cmdr. Rich Demick said the department is obligated under state law to check each of the 130 stores in the city that sell tobacco products. Typically, enforcement reviews are done three or four times a year to ensure that every business is checked at least once, he said. The review involves sending a minor into a store to purchase cigarettes. If the clerk sells them to the teen, he or she is issued a compliance ticket for violating the law, Demick said. The following stores/employees were cited in Friday's enforcement: DON'T MISS THE LATEST JOLIET NEWS. SUBSCRIBE TO OUR FREE DAILY NEWSLETTER FOR A …

Officers noticed one of the suspects near a prison fence and found he was pushing a cartload of stolen metal, Cmdr. Al Roechner said.
Two men brazenly hauling away copper from the old Joliet Correctional Center were nabbed Monday afternoon when Joliet police just happened to spot them as they drove by, Joliet Cmdr. Al Roechner said. Shaun Wesley Matheny, 30, and Dawson Abbitt, 19, both of Lockport, are accused of breaking into the closed 1127 Collins St. prison sometime prior to being discovered at 2:50 p.m. and helping themselves to sheets of copper they planned to sell, Roechner said. Police officers noticed Abbitt along a prison fence while doing a routine patrol down Collins Street and stopped to see what he was doing, Roechner said. They found him pushing a cart containing sections of cut copper plates through a fence opening, he said. The pair admitted they'd had …

Two suspects wanted in a gas station fight in which a man was shot and possibly paralyzed are in police custody, Joliet Police Cmdr. Brian Benton said today. Anthony White, 24, of Joliet, who is believed to be the triggerman in the Feb. 9 incident, was picked up in South Bend, Ind., by the St. Joseph County Police Department. He is being held on a Joliet arrest warrant for attempted murder and is to be extradited back to the city, Benton said. His cohort, Gregory Sellers, 24, was arrested Wednesday morning at his 112 Bowen Place home after he failed to turn himself in to Joliet police as arranged by his lawyer, he said.
