The center has been a long-standing part of the Joliet-based school, but has consistently operated in the red for the last several years, officials said.
Joliet Junior College's Fitness Center lost nearly $300,000 in the past year, making its closure a possibility as administrators look for places to trim $1 million from the 2013-14 budget. The suggestion was presented at the JJC Board's workshop meeting Tuesday, along with proposals to evaluate the school's Renaissance Center and Child Care Center, both of which also operate in the red. This is not the first time the fitness center has been proposed for closure. The idea was broached more than a year ago, and impassioned pleas were made by staff and students to keep it open. Beyond that, an internal audit of the center was conducted last year and suggestions made on ways to make facility more efficient and economical, yet the deficit …

In response to Karen Sorensen’s article JJC May Shut Fitness Center to Help Close $1 Million Budget Deficit: What I have been saying for two years is now front and center. Building so many buildings so quickly, the annual budget of JJC cannot absorb the operating and maintenance costs without serious growing pains. Since 80 percent of the annual budget is staffing costs, when in trouble, that’s the easiest and among the only thing to cut. JJC has cut staff over the last year by attrition and by eliminating positions. That reduces services and programs. At the same time, a tuition increase is planned to pay for a new Multipurpose building, which primarily is to hold graduations-$21.55/credit hour increase if they did it all at once. …

The event brought out a crowd, despite the swirling snow coming down outside.
The Joliet Junior College Health Professionals Center Building has been in use by students already, but the community was invited out to see the new building on Tuesday night. Trustees, elected officials, college staff and administration spoke at the event, praising the forward thinking of taxpayers who approved the $89 million referendum in 2008 that funded the construction of the HPC. In addition to having a LEED silver certification and providing one central location for nursing, fire science, radiological technology, CPR, EKG and Phlebotomy, the building also serves as a memorial for two people who helped begin the project, but passed away before the building was opened. Tracy Miser, a nursing instructor and Kimberly Crawford, …

Are you sick of your property being taxed-to-the-max and your local elected officials continuing the spending spree? On the heels of the $58M City Center project, the majority of the Joliet Junior College board is directing the administration to move forward with another new $45M building. The proposed building is referred to as the “Multipurpose” building. The primary use would be to hold graduation ceremonies. Currently JJC holds them at Lewis University because JJC doesn’t have a large enough indoor venue to hold all of the graduates, family, and friends who attend. But do they really need this? The University of Illinois doesn’t have a large enough venue either, so they hold multiple ceremonies on the same day. JJC could do this…
