Benefit Planned for Family of Jeremy Asbell

The 25-year-old Romeoville High School graduate died earlier this month in what investigators are calling an accidental drowning.

Friends are slated to host a Sept. 24 benefit in Romeoville for the family of Jeremy Asbell, the 25-year-old Bolingbrook father of two who died in a canoeing accident earlier this month. Brianne Bromberek, a friend of Asbell's, said the event is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Stone City Saloon, 721 N. Independence Blvd. Proceeds from the benefit will help the family cover funeral costs and help support Asbell’s sons Tyler, age 6, and Landen, 22 months. Bromberek said she and several of Asbell’s former RHS classmates decided to organize the event in the hopes of lessening the burden on the family after Asbell’s tragic death. Friends Remember Jeremy Asbell: 'He Always Had the Biggest Smile on His Face'

Those who knew Jeremy Asbell say he always had a smile on his face. Asbell, 25, was found dead in a Lemont retention pond Thursday morning. The Bolingbrook native and 2004 Romeoville High School graduate was reported missing early Tuesday morning after he and a friend were tossed from a canoe that capsized on the pond.  Crews discovered Asbell's body after two days of searchingthe pond, at Frontage Road and Woodward Avenue. Body of Missing Canoeist Jeremy Asbell Found in Lemont Retention Pond

Bolingbrook native, 25, reported missing around 2 a.m. Tuesday after his boat tipped over, officials said.

4:30 p.m. Preliminary results of an autopsy indicate 25-year-old Jeremy Asbell died of an accidental drowning, according to a release from the DuPage County Coroner's Office. The report also stated that there is no indication of foul play or suspcious circumstances. Search Suspended for Missing Canoeist as Crews Drain Retention Pond

Jeremy Asbell, 25, of Bolingbrook, disappeared after his canoe tipped over in a Lemont retention pond around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

6 p.m. The Lemont Fire Protection District has suspended search efforts Wednesday for 25-year-old Jeremy Asbell. According to Battalion Chief Jim Sheldon, the search was temporarily halted around 3 p.m. in the retention pond where Asbell's canoe reportedly tipped over early Tuesday morning. Three trucks from the DuPage County Public Works Department arrived on the scene with large pumps to lower water levels. "We haven't picked up anything at all, so this will hopefully help us see a little bit better when we go out again," he said. Sheldon described the pond as "very dark and murky," and said the dense weeds were making it difficult for them to pick up anything in the water. Search Suspended for Bolingbrook Man Feared Lost in Canoe Accident

Updated at 6 p.m. Family and friends have begun to organize their own search for Jeremey Asbell, the 25-year-old Bolingbrook man that went missing early Tuesday morning after his boat capsized in a retention pond in unincorporated Lemont, a source close to the family said. The group was meeting at the Loews Theater as of 5:30 p.m. to split into smaller groups so they could survey the land surrounding the pond Asbell disappeared in.
