A Romeoville man is accused of venting his anger over a hit-and-run crash by firing several gunshots into a residential area, police said. Lionel Gallego, 49, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a Firearm Owner Identification card following a Wednesday morning incident at his home in the 700 block of Rogers Road. Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steven Lucchesi said a neighbor called police around 8:42 a.m. to report hearing two to three gunshots. “It appeared that people were in the home,” but no one answered the door when police arrived, Lucchesi said. Police believe an argument escalated to the point where one son shot his father and brother, prompting the brother to return fire.
A family fight erupted into violence Saturday night, leaving a man and his father dead of gunshot wounds and a second brother seriously wounded. Joliet police were called to an apartment at 122 E. Cass St. shortly before 10 p.m. and found Roberto Gutierrez, 46, of Joliet, and his 22- and 23-year-old sons with injuries from gunfire, Cmdr. Brian Benton said Sunday. Roberto Gutierrez died at 10:20 p.m. at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and Fernando Gutierrez, 23, of Addison, at 10:12 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The 22-year-old son, whose identity wasn't released, underwent surgery at Provena for two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and one to the leg, Benton said. He is expected to survive. Witnesses said a shot had been fired into the air after an argument broke out between two groups of people, according to reports. Police said they soon after found a suspicious car near Natural Falls apartments and detained the vehicle's occupants.
A Romeoville man was arrested by Woodridge police following an incident in which gunshots were fired Wednesday night in the 8000 block of Janes Avenue. Denzel Griffin, 20, of the 1700 block of Sierra Trail in Romeoville, was charged with possession of marijuana, but police say they expect additional charges will be filed in connection with the incident. Woodridge police said they responded to the area around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.
