The Pratt & Whitney JT9D was the first high bypass ratio jet engine to power a wide-body aircraft. Richard Ugarte, Managing Director at FedEx, personally delivered and presented the engine during a reception on Monday, Jan. 14 in the university’s hangar. The FedEx Ground distribution center in the Pinnacle Business Park will be capable of sorting 15,000 packages per hour and impacting delivery to five states.

FedEx Ground’s new 238,000-square-foot distribution facility represents more than just a $37 million investment in Romeoville. The facility, soon to be the ninth in the Chicagoland region, will also bring roughly 270 new jobs to the village, FedEx Ground Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Ward Strang said during a May 10 groundbreaking ceremony. The package distribution site, located at 920 W. Taylor Road in the Pinnacle Business Park, is scheduled to be completed in September 2013 and will have an automated system capable of sorting 15,000 packages per hour. Village: Projects Could Mean Hundreds of New Jobs in Romeoville

New FedEx distribution center, warehouse project slated to start this spring.

Village trustees got a look Wednesday at two huge warehouse projects that could bring hundreds of jobs to Romeoville. Meridian Design Build, the firm hired by developer Scannell Properties to oversee design and construction on a new $37 FedEx distribution center on Taylor Road, plans to get the project under way by early April. The 239,000-square-foot facility will be built in the Pinnacle Business Park, directly across from another major Romeoville distribution facility occupied by Samsung. Meridian Senior Vice President Peter Schmidt many of the estimated 533 jobs at the FedEx facility will be new hires, as opposed to positions shifted from other FedEx locations. “A lot of times, with this type of facility, there are a lot of new hires…

Business Comings & Goings: Businesses Get New Names, FedEx Plans for $37M Project

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits — and other business developments.

If you’ve been out and about in Romeoville recently, you may have noticed some new signs springing up at not-so-new businesses. A Route 53 restaurant recently got a new name as Rosie’s Restaurant became Eggman’s. Lest you think you’re experiencing déjà vu, Romeoville Mayor John Noak confirmed that the site was known as Eggman’s several years ago before becoming Rosie’s.  Patch’s calls to the restaurant went unanswered on Wednesday, but a Facebook page for the establishment announced, “George the Eggman is back … and now in Romeoville.” The page also advertises a new menu “with stimulus pricing.” Eggman’s is located at 345 N. Independence Blvd. The eatery serves breakfast and lunch from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Another local business is making a …

Business Comings & Goings: Good-Bye to Blockbuster, Hello to FedEx

A look at new businesses coming into town and a fond farewell to those that have, for whatever reason, called it quits.

The Romeoville Blockbuster Video store is among the latest casualties as the movie rental chain continues to close locations. Signs in the windows of the Weber Road video store announce "We're moving," directing customers to the Dish Network-owned company's website. In recent years, the company has expanded into the DVD-rentals-by-mail business, competing with Netflix. The company is also offering an online streaming service and a "Blockbuster on Demand" service for Dish Network subscribers. The Romeoville store no longer offers rentals and is selling its stock of movies and video games in an "everything must go" sale. An employee at the store said the location is scheduled to close Feb. 18. The closing comes months after locations in …
