Romeoville Police Blotter: Man Charged with DUI, Driving 30-Plus Miles Over the Limit

Arrests reported by Romeoville police, other agencies, May 10-14.

May 10 Alfredo Casas, 26, of the 900 block of Savannah, Romeoville, was arrested by Will County Sheriff's police and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. Linda Sanchez, 24, of the 4700 block of Baccarrat, Joliet, was arrested by Romeoville police and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving without a license, according to jail records. May 12 David Abrego, 19, of the 1-100 block of Pine Lane in Hodgkins, Illinois, was arrested by Romeoville police and charged with aggravated DUI, driving without a valid license and driving 31-29 mph over the limit, police said.

Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

By David Mills One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. In 2011, 323 people were killed by alcohol-related crashed in Illinois, which makes up 35 percent of the 918 total crash …

You could change it to zero but people will still drive after drinking. In my humble opinion, people will drive drunk until the penalties for doing so are so severe they are destructive to ones life such as several years in jail, no drivers license ever again, 6 figure fines, etc. Even with such draconian penalties I believe people will still drive drunk because alcohol impairs your judgment. March 17 Luiz Martinez, 26, of the 400 block of Hamrick Avenue, Romeoville, was arrested at 5:46 a.m. in the 200 block of Murphy Drive and charged with driving under the influence, hit and run, improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, police said. Teen Accused of Assaulting Romeoville Police Officer, DUI

Keith Gaines, 18, allegedly tried to head-butt a cop outside of a Romeoville gas station.

An unincorporated Plainfield teenager found himself in jail late Saturday after he allegedly drove drunk, then attempted to head-butt a Romeoville police officer. Keith Gaines, 18, of the 13000 block of of South Jonesport in the Lakewood Falls subdivision, was arrested on charges of DUI and aggravated assault of an officer after police responded to the Circle K gas station, 20 S. Weber Rd., around 9:35 p.m. March 16. "We got a report of somebody in front of the building yelling and screaming at people," Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said.
