The Village Board heard an update to the downtown's new Athletic Center Wednesday and honored outgoing Assistant Police Chief Larry Vinson.
The first phase of demolition of the former Jewel-Osco and Ace Hardware store in the Spartans Square shopping center is complete, and Romeoville officials are moving ahead on plans for the new Athletic and Event Center in the downtown redevelopment plan. Village officials are predicting the new Athletic and Event Center will be completed this December. At Wednesday’s Romeoville Village Board meeting, community development director Steve Rockwell gave the board an update of the new center, which includes a 52,578-square-foot first floor and a 7,091-square foot mezzanine. The village board hired Hitchcock Design Group Wednesday to help design the downtown area. Also, trustees voted to redevelop Village Park and adopted this year's tax levy.
Plans continue to progress on Romeoville’s new downtown initiatives, with the village board Wednesday signing off on a contract with Hitchcock Design Group to help develop the look and feel of the downtown center. Hitchcock will design the public spaces for the new downtown that will focus on the new Athletic and Event Center, an $8 million project that will house indoor soccer, basketball and volleyball along with multipurpose rooms for community events. In addition to the new Athletic and Event Center, the village will demolish the Spartans’ Square shopping center and build a new storm water management facility, public off-street parking, new on-street parking and create streetscape improvements. Plans moved forward Wednesday on the proposed athletic and events complex and the Sam's Club warehouse store, for which economic incentives were approved.
Site work may begin as early as next month on Romeoville’s new athletic and events community center, which figures to be a prominent piece in the village’s downtown redevelopment initiative. The Romeoville Village Board on Wednesday hired Harbour Contractors Inc. as the construction manager for the new 66,000-square-foot community center that will include an open space design to house indoor baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and basketball. The space will also be flexible to accommodate such events as home or boat shows or seasonal festivals, village officials said. rich b, I am not saying that the jewel/osco didn't need to be torn down but why is the village using taxpayer money to buy all these parcels? And then what do they do with them? Danny boys and dog n suds have been nothing but open lots for how long?? Now we have a nice green space where crazy wallys used to be.
