Follow These Tips to Stay Safe on Cyber Monday

Ray Klump, a Lewis University professor and computer expert, offers these tips to avoid problems while online shopping.

So, you plan on doing a little shopping from your desk on the day that's unofficially been labeled Cyber Monday. Not a bad way to avoid the crowds and take a pass on circling the mall lot looking for a parking place and to avoid the lines at the registers as you try to make purchases, but there are pitfalls, too, says Dr. Ray Klump, Lewis University's director of the master of science in information security program. If you want to be safe, Klump offers these tips: 1. Make sure your computer's operating system, antivirus and anti-spyware software, and web browsers are up-to-date. Poll: Will You Shop on Cyber Monday?

Coming on the heels of Black Friday, the online shopping bonanza is typically online retailers' biggest day of the year. With deals to be had at the click of the mouse, will you be one of the millions of online shoppers?

You've barely had time to digest all that turkey, and already, the holiday shopping season is in well under way. Following hot on the heels of Black Friday, traditionally the biggest day of the year for big-box retailers, and this weekend's Small Business Saturday is Cyber Monday. Hoping to compete, online retailers spice up their sites with special deals, and even stores with brick-and-mortar locations are offering up online bargains. According to a press release from ComScore, Cyber Monday sales spiked 16 percent in 2010 over the previous year, with more than $1 billion in online spending. Amazon, like other retailers, periodically adds new deals, at limited quantities, in an effort to keep shoppers clicking back in (on their lunch breaks, of course).
