There are so many holiday traditions that we do without thinking much about how or why they started. Allow us to shed some light on a few: 1. Candy Canes. They're believed to have made their debut in the mid-1600s, when a German choirmaster made white sugar sticks shaped like shepherd’s staffs in the mid-1600s to keep fidgety kids occupied during live Nativity scenes, according to www.christianitytoday.com. The idea caught on, and became common at Nativity scenes all over Europe. To be eligible, residents must make sure their holiday lights are turned on from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12.
If your house is decked out for the holidays, don't forget to leave those lights on — members of the village's Beautification Commission will be making their rounds on Monday, Dec. 12, to pick their favorite holiday displays for the annual Christmas Decorating Contest. Those who wish to enter the contest should make sure their outdoor displays are well lit from 6 to 10 p.m. on juding day. Only homes with their lights on will be eligible to win, and judging will be based on the creative use of outdoor decorations. First-, second- and third-place winners will be chosen from the north, south, central and west regions of Romeoville.
