The Joliet Catholic Academy Alumni Association honored five with its 2012 Alumni Awards.
Call them the Fab Five. Matthew Bertani (’79), Kevin Cameron (’98), DebyJo and Jack Ericksen and Robert Lovstad were honored by the Joliet Catholic Academy Alumni Association with Alumni Awards at its annual Honors Banquet. Shamus Mudron (’95), the president of the JCA Alumni Association, was master of ceremonies and the invocation was given by Jeffrey Budz, JCA’s Principal and CEO. The event at the Joliet Country Club was run by the JCA Alumni Association in conjunction with Holly Scordo (’90), JCA’s Director of Alumni Relations. An update on the progress being made at the college preparatory high school for boys and girls was delivered as well by Budz, who also handled the benediction. Ten students from Shorewood were among 51 members inducted and 55 honored with medals as Joliet Catholic Academy celebrated its foreign language studies.
The World Languages Department at Joliet Catholic Academy recently held its induction and honor ceremony, installing 51 students into the various honor societies and also awarding 55 medals. The ceremony in the co-educational high school’s chapel began with an address and a prayer and closed with a prayer by Diane Nowaczyk, JCA’s Director of Institutional Advancement. William Powers will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lewis University; contest winners will be announced at the same event.
The 4-month Great Read program ends this week with an in-person visit from William Powers, author of Hamlet's Blackberry, the book that was the center of the program's readings, discussions and contests. Powers will speak on his book and modern technology at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lewis University in Romeoville. The session is being held in the University Dining Room, and Powers will be available to answer questions and sign books. Light refreshments will be served. Winners of The Great Read 2011 student and community art and writing contests will be announced and prizes awarded at the same event. A tactical officer and nine-year veteran of the force, Truhlar was shocked when he learned he was chosen for the honor.
It was a few — OK, make that six — months late, but on Nov. 18, Romeoville Police Officer Brian Truhlar was named the department's 2009 Officer of the Year. The annual award, considered one of the top honors bestowed on an officer by the police chief, is usually awarded in May. A combination of factors, including the relocation of the Romeoville Police Department headquarters to the new Village Hall, delayed the 2009 ceremony this year. The Officer of the Year Award dates back to the 1980s. A committee recognizes officers throughout the year for their good deeds, and then the chief makes his selection for the Officer of the Year.
