Gun Control: Where Does Your Congressman Stand?

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for a change.

When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws.  In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check."  What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that …

For all you anti gun people...we can charter a bus and drop you and your wife and kids off on the south side of Chicago for a four block walk through "the neighborhood"...a gun in a sealed envelope. If you open it before you get back to the bus which we will park four blocks down...you have to promise to change your position on CCW and guns in general. Any takers?   more ›

Demonstrators Put Spotlight on 'Work That Needs Doing'

Protesters gather at bridge in Joliet for national day of action.

A group of about 40 people gathered in the cold wind near the Jefferson Street bridge in downtown Joliet Thursday as part of a national day of action, declaring an “economic emergency for the 99 percent.” Held at bridges across the nation that have been designated as structurally unsound, the demonstrations were inspired by Work That Needs Doing, a project whose mission is to put Americans back to work repairing the country’s infrastructure and meeting America’s education, healthcare and clean-energy needs. “In virtually every community you’ll see work that needs doing, states the group's website, workthatneedsdoing.org. “Rundown schools. Crumbling bridges. Neglected parks, recreation centers and playgrounds. Buildings that need to be more…

Protesters: Kinzinger's Actions a 'Slap in the Face'

About 25 protesters from liberal activist group MoveOn.org delivered a petition to Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-Manteno) asking for him to focus on job creation in his 11th congressional district.

After Senate Republicans blocked action on the American Jobs Act this week, the president said he'll keep trying to rally public support. And although Republicans in the House have said they won't even consider the $447 billion plan, area activists have spent this week protesting at the local offices of congressmen. About 25 protesters organized by liberal activist group MoveOn.org packed the office of Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-Manteno) on Thursday afternoon to deliver a petition asking for the first-term representative to put more of a focus on job creation in the 11th District, which covers Frankfort, Mokena, New Lenox and other areas of Will County. "We can’t cut our way out of this," said Sue Myers, a Frankfort resident and …

New Congressional Map Shifts Romeoville from 13th Congressional District to 3rd District

Republicans plan to file a legal challenge against the map.

Republican leaders are vowing to fight a new Congressional map they say favors Democrats. On Friday morning, Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a redrawn map of state Congressional district boundaries that places Romeoville largely in the 3rd Illinois U.S. Congressional District, under Democrat Rep. Dan Lipinski. Previously, Romeoville was part of the 13th Congressional District under Republican Rep. Judy Biggert. The rest of Romeoville would be part of a new 11th District. Currently, the 11th district is represented by freshman Rep. Adam Kinzinger. Under the new map, Kinzinger now resides in the new 2nd Congressional District, long represented by Democrat Jesse Jackson Jr. In a joint statement, Republican U.S. legislators from Illinois …
