Romeoville’s Abby Smith Gets Team Started

The sophomore center fielder is a leader both offensively and defensively.

Monday’s matchup against Joliet Catholic Academy was not a pretty one as the Angels beat the Spartans 11-1. Yet the play of sophomore center fielder Abby Smith sure was pretty. When Romeoville’s players had holes in their bats against Joliet Catholic’s Mallory Goulding, who pitched a one-run complete game for the win, Smith went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and reached base on an error. Opening the game as the Spartans leadoff hitter, Smith was facing some heat from Goulding as she knew adjustments needed to be made so her team could come back from a 1-0 deficit. “It was in a gap as a grounder and should have been up a little more,” Smith said. “I fought the first pitch but my coach (Christina Douglas) told me that Goulding was throwing …

Softball: Bombs Away for Joliet Catholic; Spartans Drop Home Game

JCA puts up 15 hits and two home runs to defeat Romeoville.

Not much was working for Romeoville at the plate as the Spartans managed just three hits while leaving eight runners on base in an 11-1 home loss to Joliet Catholic Academy Monday. The Spartans (8-2) could not figure out JCA (8-1) pitcher Mallory Goulding (4-0) as she threw six innings of one-run softball with six strikeouts and two walks. The one-run production came after Romeoville pushed 16 runs in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Argo. Goulding got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning to preserve a 1-0 lead by inducing Romeoville first baseman and pitcher Melissa Guzior into consecutive infield pop ups. “I thought our pitcher did a great job,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said. “She had some situations where we made errors. …

Romeoville Point Guard Smith Helps Turn Program Around

Floor leader is one of four sophomores who have Spartans vying for Southwest Prairie Conference title.

When things get a little crazy on the basketball court, it’s nice to have a floor leader to guide you through the rough patches. For Romeoville’s girls basketball team, it’s sophomore point  guard Abby Smith. She may be an underclassman, but Smith now has one-and-a-half seasons as a starting point  guard under her belt, and she’s doing a little of everything on the court for a Spartans squad that is off to its best start in many, many years. On Tuesday, Smith had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and the 5-foot-8 guard even blocked a trio of shots in Romeoville's 65-46 defeat of Plainfield Central. The  victory was the Spartans’ 13th in a row and sends them into Friday’s first-place showdown against Minooka with a 9-1 mark in the …

Girls Basketball: History in the Making at Romeoville

Spartans improve to 14-4 after rout of Joliet Central.

JOLIET–Monday marked a historic day in United States history. And it marked a history day for Romeoville, too. Like Martin Luther King Jr., the Romeoville girls basketball team is trying to make some history during the 2010-11 season. The Spartans jumped to an early lead and cruised to a 68-22 victory over Joliet Central at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Hoops at Joliet West. Romeoville is 14-4 and will post the program’s best record in more than two decades this season. “This feels really great because we want to make history at the school,” Romeoville sophomore Briana Harris said. “They haven’t had a winning season in a while. We’re trying to get our team recognized.” “She’s a good shooter and her range is phenomenal,” Romeoville …

Girls Basketball: Spartans Not Perfect, But Win Again

Romeoville girls defeat Mt. Assisi even while not at their best.

You know the Romeoville girls basketball team is having a nice year when a 2-0 weekend is not enough to satisfy the Spartans. Romeoville (13-4) coach Julio Carrasco wasn’t thrilled with the way his girls played in a win over Plainfield East on Friday and then a 54-36 win over Mt. Assisi on Saturday still left the Spartans wondering how to snap out of it. “Our defense is pretty solid, and we got ourselves a lot of possessions off the press, but we missed a lot of layups and easy shots,” Carrasco said. “We got plenty of turnovers, but we have to finish better.” The Spartans forced 10 Eagles turnovers in the first quarter while jumping ahead 17-8, then extended the margin to 29-15 at the half after Mt. Assisi (6-12) turned it over seven more …

Romeoville Runs Away from Oswego

Spartans use 24-4 surge to pull away from Panthers in 56-42 girls basketball victory on Tuesday night.

The Romeoville girls basketball team is all about respect. It's given plenty of it to the opposition over the past five years, especially to those in the Southwest Prairie Conference. This year, the Spartans are taking some of it back. Romeoville won its fifth game in a row by putting together a 24-4 run during the second and third quarters of a 56-42 SPC road win Tuesday over Oswego. The Spartans are 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the SPC. The previous four years, Romeoville had won five conference games. "We're pushing with the respect thing," Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. "We've been getting killed against these teams. We lost to (Oswego) by 17 and 23 last year. We lost to Oswego East by 30 last year. We just want to push forward. We …

Romeoville Stuns LW North to Win Oak Lawn Tourney

Spartans' Currie wins MVP award; Smith earns spot on all-tournament team.

OAK LAWN – The last time the Romeoville girls basketball team played in a Christmas tournament championship game, most of the current Spartans weren't born yet. Romeoville stunned Lincoln-Way North 60-50 Wednesday night in the championship game of the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament. It's the first tournament championship for the Spartans in at least 18 years. "It's been at least 18 years since Romeoville's been in a championship, must less won it," Romeoville sophomore guard Abby Smith said. "To win it is even better. Christmas tournament champions. It feels good to say that." "We came out there with a lot of confidence," Romeoville sophomore Kiera Currie said. "Coach really built us up to get to this game and win it. Coach told us it was all…

Currie Raises Romeoville Over Oak Lawn in OT

Kiera Currie's double-double helps Romeoville tip Oak Lawn 53-51 in overtime to advance to Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament title game.

It was a battle of the Spartans on Tuesday night as Romeoville and Oak Lawn squared off in girls basketball for the right to advance to the championship game of the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament. Kiera Currie, a sophomore center/forward, put up the three points in overtime that Romeoville needed to beat Oak Lawn 53-51. "I'm just happy to leave here with a win," Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. "It was a bad game all around. We made some adjustments early, but they came back and countered our adjustments. We couldn't get into the flow of the offense." Romeoville (6-5) advances to the tournament championship game against Lincoln-Way North at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. "Lincoln-Way North is a big team," Carrasco said. "We've got to get more …

Romeoville Girls Bag Second Straight Victory

Abby Smith scores 13 and Kierra Currie adds a second-half double-double as Spartans take down Harlan.

As the mad rush for last minute shopper's progresses, Oak Lawn tipped off its annual girls basketball holiday tournament. And two teams went shopping for a victory at noon on Saturday. Romeoville faced off against Harlan in the first round. The Spartans (6-4) added their second victory in as many days by taking down the Falcons 53-41. Both teams started slowly. Harlan led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. When Romeoville sophomore forward Kierra Currie registered two fouls early, sophomore teammate Abby Smith was forced to lead the way for the Spartans. Smith finished with 13 points, five steals and four assists. "We had a big win (Friday over Oswego East), and were focused on holding our struggles to one (quarter)," Smith said. "It's…

Furr Sparks Minooka Victory over Romeoville, Joins 1,000-Point Club

Indians' senior scores 26 points and plays stellar defense in 55-41 win over Spartans.

Stephanie Furr became the fifth female basketball player in Minooka High School history to score 1,000 career points Friday night against Romeoville. However, it was her defense that set the tone for the host Indians' 55-41 Southwest Prairie Conference victory. Furr, who is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, was assigned to Romeoville point guard Abby Smith. The Spartans' sophomore was held scoreless through 3 1/2 quarters, and finished with six points before fouling out in the final minute. "One of the major points on defense tonight was stopping Abby," Furr said. "We remembered her from last year. She's a really good player. They put me on her and I did the best I can. Everybody else played good defense, too."  "That was one…
