Harper: Transition to Common Core Standards Starts Next Fall

District 202 Superintendent John Harper's last column of the school year.

This time of year is filled with important transitions for students -- from grade to grade, level to level and from high school to college, the workplace, the military or some other life path.  Next fall, District 202 itself also faces one of the most important changes in the history of public education when the national Common Core Learning Standards will start to replace the state learning standards. The Common Core Standards for Math will be implemented in District 202 next school year. Common Core Learning Standards for Language Arts will follow in 2014-15.  We have talked a lot this year about the change to Common Core Standards. This shift will significantly impact our students, school district and community. It is very important …

WWII Vets Sought for Free Honor Flight: Operation Locate a Hero

Regional Honor Flight Teams are being formed in the Lincoln-Way communities.

Regional teams are being formed to help identify the estimated 20,000 surviving World War II Vets in the southwest suburbs. The goal is to get as many as are able to participate in the free, one-day Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Operation Locate a Hero for the southwest suburbs is headquartered at New Lenox Village Hall. According to Nancy Hoehn, economic development director, those from throughout the Lincoln-Way communities might be particularly interested in joining this effort. However, volunteers from Plainfield south and from Minooka west are invited to join in the regional effort. A meeting is planned for the day after Memorial Day, from 6-8 pm. May 28 at New Lenox…

Hearings Scheduled After Districts Shoot Down Online Charter School

Eighteen area school districts voted against allowing Illinois Virtual Charter School @ Fox River Valley to launch.

After getting rejected by 18 school districts, including Plainfield and Valley View, a group looking to create an online charter school has appealed to the Illinois State Charter School Commission. Nonprofit Virtual Learning Solutions and for-profit partner K-12 Inc. want to launch the Illinois Virtual Charter School @ Fox River Valley. But this spring, area school districts proved less than receptive, voting one by one to reject the proposal. The charter school commission has set a series of hearings — one for each of the 18 districts — for June 19, 20, 21 and 24 in the western suburbs, according to the Chicago Tribune. According to the state board of education, the commission will vote separately on all 18 appeals on July 16. Click here …

There are already alternatives for your children. However, my guess is you are not willing to make the sacrifices required to take advantage of them. Regardless, the law states that your children are entitled to a free appropriate public education. If your child 'cannot learn' in the current environment then you should be requesting an IEP evaluation to ascertain why. If you are not happy with …   more ›

As West Nile Season Starts, Health Dept. Begins Mosquito Monitoring

Health officials are monitoring mosquitoes at 12 sites throughout Will County, and ask for the public's help by reporting dead birds.

Will County Environmental Health began its 2013 mosquito monitoring on Thursday. According to the health department, Environmental Health personnel will conduct weekly monitoring at more than a dozen locations throughout the county. The first mosquito samples were collected Thursday, despite wet conditions at some trap locations that made collection difficult. Weekly mosquito monitoring has been a capstone of Will County's West Nile Virus (WNV) surveillance and prevention programs since 2002, when Illinois led the nation with 884 human cases and 64 fatalities. WNV is a mosquito-borne disease capable of producing encephalitis and meningitis, potentially fatal inflammations of the brain and spinal chord.  Will County began dead bird …

Higher Speed Limit Bill Heads to Gov's Desk

70 mph on rural interstates not a done deal yet, as bill has its opponents.

A bill to increase the maximum speed limit in Illinois could hit Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk for signature soon. Whether Quinn will sign it remains to be seen. The bill, introduced by Republican State. Sen. Jim Oberweis, would raise the speed limit on rural Illinois highways to 70 mph. The bill, which has passed both chambers of the state legislature, has been met with opposition due to safety concerns by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to the Chicago Tribune. “The progression of this legislation is a good example of what can be accomplished when lawmakers work together in a bipartisan manner for the good of our state,” Oberweis said. “It was sponsored by …

Outside of a few US highways that allow a higher speed limit (US 51 in central IL and US 20 in NW IL for example), this applies mainly to our interstate highways.   more ›
