Go Jump in the Lake and Hear Hitchcock's Vertigo This Weekend

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is playing the score to Vertigo while the movie is screened Friday night. Plus other events in our '3 Things To Do Downtown.'

Vertigo is a movie you can watch again and again, but you’ve likely never seen it quite like this. Friday night the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will accompany the movie playing Bernard Hermann’s “haunting and hypnotic score.” The performance begins at 8 p.m. Click here for tickets.

Not cold enough for you this week? How about a dip in the lake to really get your chill on? The Lakeview Polar Bear Club will be plunging into Lake Michigan to raise money for two families in need at Oak Street Beach Saturday at noon. You can still register online for $30 or at the beach for $40. Or just go to watch the human icicles emerge from the water.

Go on a (free) polar adventure

How about a less chilly polar adventure? The Chicago Park District hosts a Polar Adventure Day at Northerly Island from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The free event features birds of prey and coyotes, a dog sledding demo, arts and crafts and a special “ice fishing” area for toddlers. (We presume the quotes mean they won’t be sent to an actual hole in the ice.) The first 500 people there get a free cup of hot cocoa. The event itself is free, though parking costs $3, cash only.
