Whiz Kids: Creekside Kids Turn Spring Break Fun into Cash for Humane Society

Inspired by a school project, students from the Weslake subdivision came up with a traffic-stopping way to raise money for homeless pets.

Each week, Romeoville Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and we'll select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to shannon.antinori@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information listed below.

  • Whiz Kids' age: 11
  • Whiz Kids' school: Creekside Elementary School
  • Whiz Kids' accomplishment: Donated $80 to the Romeoville Humane Society. While on spring break, Macy and her friends decided to raise money for the Romeoville Humane Society. They made posters, stood on the corner in their neighborhood in Weslake and got to work. The posters read: "For every time you HONK, we donate $0.25 to the Romeoville Humane Society!" The kids got the idea after raising money for the Romeoville Humane Society with their school, Creekside Elementary, in a program called Pennies for Pets. Two kids held signs, another was in charge of keeping track of the number of times people would honk and the others ran around, yelling to get attention from people driving by. Some people even stopped to donate money themselves. The kids planned to keep tally throughout the day (there were out there for about six hours total) and then each would contribute an even amount of their own money, which would make up the donation. In the end, between the number of honks they received and the change they collected from people, $80 was given to the Romeoville Humane Society to help the pets.
  • Whiz Kids' key to awesomeness: Coming up with a great idea for something fun to do on spring break right here in their own neighborhood while helping a good cause.
