Aspiring Eagle Soars with Pet Project

Michael Zimmer’s love of animals and commitment to the community inspired him to create last weekend’s supply drive for animals rescued by the Romeoville Humane Society.

Zimmer enlisted fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 22 and the humane society to join him at the local , and  to collect dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, leashes, treats and toys, water bowls and bedding, as well as monetary donations.

As a result of Zimmer’s project, the 15-year-old will soar to the rank of Eagle, Boy Scouting’s highest rank. And the local humane society and the many animals it rescues have greatly benefitted from the scout’s efforts, too.

According to Romeoville Humane Society Treasurer Brian Laibl, monetary donations collected in Saturday’s drive  totaled $1,126.17 and $1,775 was collected in adoption fees for eight animals. Humane society secretary Megan Ziller sent a big “Way to go” to Michael as the tally of supplies donations came in.

Friends of felines donated 15 bags of dry food totaling 143 pounds, 110 cans of wet food, 78 toys, two pounds of  treats and 443 pounds of litter. Not to be outdone, canine chums chipped in 46 cans of wet food, 33 bags of dry food totaling 370 pounds, 45 toys, 50 pounds of treats, a large bed and plenty of collars, leashes, harnesses, bowls, grooming supplies and more.
