Softball: Romeoville's Ceara Floyd Has Hot Bat Against Bolingbrook

The sophomore third baseman hit two home runs Saturday while going 3-for-3.

Getting out of a slump can be tough, as Romeoville sophomore third baseman Ceara Floyd has experienced.

But the feeling of overcoming one makes it worthwhile.

On Saturday against Bolingbrook, Floyd broke out of her cold streak in a big way with two home runs on route to a 3-for-3 day.

“Ceara has been struggling a bit offensively at the plate,” Romeoville head coach Christina Douglas said. “She has been working on some adjustments and today, those adjustments clicked and she put it together.”

Floyd slapped a double into the outfield in the second inning off Bolingbrook senior pitcher Eryn Pondo, who frustrated Romeoville batters the entire game.

“I’ve been in a slump lately and I wanted a hit,” Floyd said. “I was waiting and it was perfect.”

The first home run was in the fourth. Romeoville trailed 3-0 and Pondo was lights out at that point. Floyd stepped into the batter’s box and crushed a solo shot to left-center field. That score started a rally for the Spartans, who pushed another run through that inning.

“I was just waiting for my pitch and I just drove through the ball,” Floyd said. “I was ready for it.”

The sixth witnessed another authoritative home run by Floyd. She teed off on a low fastball, ticketing it to left-center to finish the scoring 7-3 in favor of Bolingbrook.

“Floyd is a decent hitter for them,” Bolingbrook head coach Jean Ryan-Moak said. “She had two homers and a base hit, but it didn’t hurt us.”

Even though Pondo was difficult to hit Saturday, Floyd said she prepared for her like any other challenging pitcher.

“Usually, I back up in the box and shorten up my swing a little bit to make an adjustment; then, I’m all good,” Floyd said.

Floyd is an infield captain for Romeoville and said she has the responsibility to make sure every infielder is playing together as a team.

For Romeoville (11-14) to be ready for playoff action against West Aurora May 23,  Floyd said her unit’s performance will be crucial for victory.

“We’ve got to keep play like how we are playing now,” Floyd said. “We have to drive and save runs more often now.”
