Romeoville Seniors Go Out In Style

Sophomore Kiera Currie scored 23 points to help send Romeoville's senior class out with a win and the team's 20th victory.

Credit the Romeoville girls basketball team for doing all of the little things for the sake of the big picture.

Take Thursday's 56-39 win against Plainfield East as an example. The 17-point triumph featured the Spartans exceling in the finer points of the game.

"Plainfield East has played us tough. They're a physical team," said Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco. "They take us out of our offense and we become an undisciplined team playing them."

Romeoville players gutted their way through screens, absorbed hard fouls and won every hustle point that was to be earned by invading the passing lanes and crashing the boards.

For Romeoville to have success on the hardwood in the winter, the seeds of success were planted during the summer.

"The seniors did a great job this summer getting the girls here, driving them because most of the girls don't drive," Carrasco explained. "It all started this summer. Eliza, Navadee and Raquel did a nice job."

Seniors Eliza Claudio, Navadee Gonzalez and Raquel Sessoms were honored prior to the regular season finale against Plainfield South. Each started and made contributions to the win, with the biggest impact being made on the glass where the trio corralled eight rebounds and provided the team with ample amounts of energy from the get-go.

"When you have girls who want to work and want to learn, it's easy. This game becomes easy," Carrasco said.

Romeoville's seniors weren't alone in getting their elbows dirty. Sophomore Kiera Currie carried a bulk of the load, making life that much easier for the team's upperclassmen.

Currie scored 23 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and swiped eight steals in the win. Seventeen of Currie's game-high 23 came in the first half as the Spartans established the inside presence early and went to it often.

"Kiera's a beast. We fed that thing the whole time today and she did a great job. She did a tremendous job and I can't say enough about it," Carrasco said.

In the end, Currie's performance was icing on the cake of a 20-win season that everyone involved—from upperclassmen and underclassmen to coaches and fans— could be proud of upon leaving the gymnasium.

"For the last four years or five years I've been here, this feels tremendous," Carrasco said. "It's a great, great thing and I know those girls are really excited."
