Girls Basketball: A.V. Martinez Ousted in Regional Title Game

Brittany Osborne scored a team-high 11 points for the Vikings. Jahari Smith grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked six shots.

A dry spell that started in the second quarter and extended into the third spelled the end of the line for the Romeoville A.V. Martinez eighth-grade girls basketball.

Martinez dropped a 36-28 decision to Homer Junior High in the Oak Prairie Regional title game on Friday, according to a news release from Valley View School District.

Homer scored 11 straight points in the second and third quarters and next advances to face Bolingbrook Brooks in IESA sectional play on Wednesday night.

Martinez (15-7) started slow, scoring on a Brittany Osborne layup off a pass from Maddie Massaro after 4 minutes had gone by in the first quarter, according the the Valley View School District news release. Haley Gwin's three-pointer tied the score 10-10 with 3 seconds left.

Then, Jahari Smith's put-back and Osborne's jumper made it 14-12 for the Vikings with 3:25 to go in the half before Homer went on its 11-point run, according to the Valley View School District news release. Osborne led the Vikings with 11 points. Smith finished with 7 points, 17 rebounds and 6 blocks. Massaro scored 7 points.
