Extras: Romeoville Baseball Looks to Break Out of Slump

Spartans' spirits are high, despite struggles.

Romeoville baseball has found difficulty in getting the offensive charge consistent. In the team's last two games, including the 12-1 loss to Plainfield North Wednesday, the Spartans have only posted one run as they stretch a four-game slide.

With the season winding down, Romeoville (11-17, 8-12) looks to make a complete 360 in their offensive performance.

“We need to find a way to score some runs,” Spartans coach Dennis House said after Wednesday's loss to Plainfield North. “We seem to play well against quality teams. We’ve just run into a lot of consistency problems. We need to put this one behind us and play better tomorrow.”

Earlier this season, Romeoville defeated a stellar top-20 state ranked Sandburg team by 10-rout rule (10-0) and lost a 6-5 thriller against top-ranked Providence Catholic.

RHS ran into some defensive issues in the Plainfield loss, making numerous errors in each inning. The schedule for the Spartans is difficult, but Romeoville isn't making excuses for their struggles this season.

“We play hard every day and bust our [tails] out on the field,” said senior pitcher Kyle Lenihan Wednesday. “[Plainfield North] is a very beatable team. We definitely got to clean up our play. To win the [regional] plaque you got to play the game clean.”

Romeoville plays Plainfield North Thursday, Lockport Friday and has a double header against Bolingbrook Saturday to close out the season. The Spartans enter the Waubonsie Valley Regional on Monday to begin the postseason.

Although the Spartans understand the uphill battle ahead, they're confident as a team that they will turn the tide.

In the Romeoville clubhouse, which usually displays the Southwest Prairie Conference standings, it simply is written: Romeoville 0-0.

“Our bats are a little cold right now; we’ll come through,” said senior centerfielder Matt Gillis. “It’s been a roller coaster season. We have to win out the rest of the season. To get that [regional plaque], we have to beat the big teams to walk off with it.”
