Analysis: Romeoville Looks Forward After Tough Loss

Spartans coach Christina Douglas optimistic about team's future.

Romeoville’s season came to a disappointing finish Monday as the Spartans struggled at the plate all day against West Aurora starter Franny Evischi.

Evischi’s pitches weren’t overpowering, but she used varying speeds, decent movement and good location to keep the bats on ice for almost the entire game.

“You can’t take anything away from her [Evischi],” Spartans coach Christina Douglas. “She had a great game today.”

The Spartans’ bats, which were a strength going into the regular season, struggled down the stretch with consistency and stringing together hits. The Spartans only managed two hits — both in the fifth on infield hits — and had a total of six baserunners with two reaching on errors and two being hit.

“We absolutely thought we were going to carry the momentum on our offense the rest of the season,” Douglas said. “Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out to be the case.”

Romeoville goes into 2012 with a strong contingent of future seniors. Some losses, however, most notably power hitter and first baseman Jami Shawmeker, will be tough to recover from, but Douglas isn’t too worried.

“This is a good group of girls, definitely. They’ve played together for a long time through travel ball and summer ball,” she said. “We hope the upcoming senior class will provide the leadership that the team needs.”
