VVSD to Vote on All-Day Kindergarten Architect

The board of education meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12.

The Board of Education is scheduled to vote Monday on a $650,000 contract with Wight and Company of Darien for architectural and engineering services needed to outfit all 12 elementary school campuses to accommodate a new all-day kindergarten program.

In January, that included renovations, additions and a combination of the two to allow the buildings to house the new program.

According to the proposal, construction costs are estimated at $12 million.

Under the proposed contract with Wight, the projects would be completed in time for the 2012-13 school year.

Last month, the board for elementary school students and for students with special needs. Now it’s high school students’ turn.

The board is scheduled to vote on finalizing details for the 2012 high school summer school program, to be held at .

According to a report by Rachel Kinder, assistant superintendent for education (grades 6-12), total staffing needs for the program will be determined by enrollment.

Tuition is slated to be set at $150 per course for VVSD students and $180 for non-residents.

Driver’s education fees are set at $200 per student plus a $20 fee to the State of Illinois for processing of the driver’s instruction permit for VVSD students and a $300 fee plus $20 state fee for non-residents.

Two summer school sessions will be offered: June 11 to June 29 and July 2 through July 20. The instructional day will be from 7:30 to 11:45 a.m.

Transportation will not be provided.

Driver’s ed will be offered from June 11 to July 9. Students can take an early session from 7:30 am. to 10:30 a.m. or a late session from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

The total budget for running the summer school program is estimated at more than $117,000, including $102,000 in teachers’ salaries, which will be partially reimbursed by tuition.

Phoenix Experience summer program

The board will also vote on the summer school program for Valley View’s alternative school, The Phoenix Experience, offered at Bolingbrook High School.

Tuition will be $150 per session. The program is open to VVSD/Phoenix Experience students only.

The program will run from June 11 through June 29. An early session will be offered from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and a later session will be from noon to 4 p.m.

Salary costs are estimated at more than $16,000, to be partially reimbursed by tuition, plus $1,785 to staff the school with a nurse and $2,700 for summer school security.
