VVSD Chief: Class Sizes 'To Be Envied'

Elementary class sizes are below the national average, Mitchem says.

Despite over two years, has worked to keep reductions as far from the classroom as possible — and administrators say the district can now boast lower-than-average class sizes.

On Monday, Superintendent James Mitchem gave the board of education an update on K-5 enrollment numbers, saying administrators worked to keep class sizes as low as possible in grades K-3, the years research shows are most critical to a student’s academic success.

“We are really keeping an eye on our numbers, and we are really to be envied concerning our class averages,” he said.

The U.S. Department of Education estimates the average class size is currently 25 students.

The following are the average class sizes for grades K-5:

  • Kindergarten: 22.61
  • First grade: 23.56
  • Second grade: 22.82
  • Third grade: 23.87
  • Fourth grade: 25.16
  • Fifth grade: 26.06
