Things Will be Heating Up at Romeoville High School

RHS boiler plant replacement project is underway

Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by Valley View School District.

Work is underway to replace the aging heating system at Romeoville High School with a new, high efficiency boiler plant that will not only produce a more comfortable environment for students and staff but will also save the district money.

Two of the boilers in the existing five-boiler plant have served the 330,000 square foot building since it was built in 1963. All five boilers operate year-round because they are used in the production of domestic hot water as well as heating water.

The new plant will include four boilers with variable water flow capacity and a set of distribution pumps that will be able to deliver as little or as much water as needed to the building. Fuel usage is expected to decrease by at least 20 percent, yielding an estimated annual savings of $30,000.

Two new storage tanks will allow the school district to separate the production of domestic water from the water heating process, eliminating the need for domestic hot water production pumps which will save another $10,000 a year in electricity costs.

Nearly $100,000 of the approximately $722,000 project is expected to be covered through utility rebates and incentives from the state’s Custom Energy Incentive Program. Additional grant money is expected as well.
