One hundred sixty three District 202 high school graduates and current students have been named 2012 AP Scholars based on their performance on the Advanced Placement exams given during the 2011-2012 school year.

The 163 AP Scholars — including four students who earned the highest Scholar designation (one more than last year) — is up 22 percent from last year, and is the most ever for District 202. Last year, 134 students were named AP Scholars.

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program lets motivated and academically prepared high school students take challenging, college-level courses and get college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

District 202’s ongoing success with the AP Scholar program is a real celebration, especially as school districts and communities continue to struggle with the recession’s impact on education, said Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Glenn Wood.

“Despite the many challenges District 202 has faced because of the bad economy, we continue to focus our resources on our classrooms, so that our students always get the best opportunities for learning and success,” Wood said.

“We have worked very hard over the last several years to make sure all of our students are academically challenged, largely by increasing the number of AP classes we offer, increasing access to those classes and supporting our students who choose to take them,” Wood said.

In 2006, District 202 offered only four AP courses. This year, District 202 offers 24 AP courses.

Students do not have to take the AP exams associated with their courses, but most do. “Taking the test helps the student because they may earn college credit for their subject area, and it helps us gauge whether we are teaching the AP courses effectively,” he said.

This year’s results follow major initiatives implemented over the last several years to improve high school achievement, by raising the number of more challenging courses, making it easier for more students to take such courses and eliminating some lower-level classes, among numerous other systemic upgrades.

The 2012 AP Scholars include:

  • 42 students, up from 32 last year;
  • 35 students, down from 48 last year;
  • 50 students, up from 40 last year;
  • 36 students, up from 14 last year.

The AP Scholar Awards are given at four levels:

  • AP Scholars earned at least a 3 (out of a possible five) on three or more AP exams. This year, District 202 had 79 AP Scholars, down from 83 last year.
  • AP Scholars with Honor earned an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. This year, District 202 had 40 AP Scholars with Honor, up from 21 last year.
  • AP Scholars with Distinction earned an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. This year, District 202 had 44 AP Scholars with Distinction, up from 30 last year.
  • National AP Scholar status is granted to students in the United States who earn an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. This year, District 202 had four National AP Scholars, one more than last year: PNHS seniors (now graduates) Kyle Chynoweth and Alexander Hish and PEHS seniors (now graduates) Andrew Elam and Javier Suarez.
Highlights from this year’s AP Scholar data:
  • PSHS graduate Robert Koulakes took 13 AP exams, the most among all District 202 students.
  • PNHS junior (now senior) John Ryan earned the highest average AP score – five out of a possible five – by scoring 5’s on all six exams he took.
  • PNHS posted the highest school average score – 3.86 out of a possible five, followed by PEHS (3.68); PHSCC (3.58); and PSHS (3.44).
