Photos: Hermansen Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

In conjunction with Read Across America Day, March 2 was the "Cat in the Hat" author's 108th birthday.

Every year, on March 2, the National Education Association encourages everyone to pick up a book as part of a nationwide literacy awareness event known as Read Across America Day.

The date coincides with the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss, so on Friday, reading aide Kim Davis took the opportunity to don her best red-and-white striped hat.

Dressed as "The Cat in the Hat," Davis stopped in at every classroom from first through fifth grades to encourage kids to read, remind them of the school's April 26 Family Reading Night and stress the importance of doing their very best on upcoming ISAT tests.

High-fiving students as she walked down the halls, Davis said it's the first time she's dressed up for Seuss' birthday.

"The kids are just loving it," she said, adding the costume will make a second appearance at Family Reading Night.

"I might even have Thing One and Thing Two with me," Davis added with a laugh.

First-graders also celebrated Seuss' birthday by cooking up — what else? — green eggs and ham in teacher Michelle Pusateri's classroom.
