On 9/11 Anniversary, Local Students Will Spell out U-S-A

Pioneer Elementary School Assistant Principal Jeff Mitchem says "effort designed to "recognize and honor those who perished that day."

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, many Americans will celebrate Patriot Day.

Students at Valley View School District's Pioneer Elementary School in Bolingbrook will mark the occasion by spelling out "U-S-A" across the school's lawn in a colorful red, white and blue display at 2:15 p.m. on the anniversary of the 9/11 attack in New York City.

"We are all aware of the significance behind this day; however, some of our students are not aware of the tragedy that struck out country that day," Pioneer Elementary School Assistant Principal Jeff Mitchem said. "In an effort to recognize and honor those who perished that day and the brave individuals who responded that day, we will continue our tradition of representing our country with our own symbol of patriotism."

In the past, Mitchem said the student body at Pioneer Elementary School has created an American flag and a star while wearing red, white and blue. This year, the plan is to spell out "U-S-A."

And Mitchem has asked students to dress accordingly:

  • First- and fourth-graders will wear red.
  • Kindergarten and second-graders will wear white.
  • Third- and fifth-graders will wear blue.
Also, Wednesday, the entire study body at both Tibbott and Independence elementary schools will meet at the school flag poles to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the day (9:05 to 9:10 a.m.), according to a Valley View School District spokesman.
