Meeting, Events Rescheduled Post-Blizzard

The village board will now meet Feb. 9, while the Valley View Educational Enrichment Foundation Spelling Bee was moved to Feb. 10.

Events are being rescheduled after a blizzard forced schools, government offices and businesses to close last week.

The Romeoville village board has rescheduled its Feb. 2 board meeting, canceled after the winter storm dumped more than 16 inches of snow on the Romeoville area. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the .

Agenda items include a $107,317 contract with ComEd to move overhead utilities underground as part of the Dalhart streetscape project; a $325,000 contract to replace street lights along Taylor Road; a $143,550 deal to purchase a dump truck; and a resolution to support a Will County project to improve the intersection of Weber and Renwick roads.

Also rescheduled for this week is the Valley View School District . Originally scheduled for Feb. 3, the event is now slated for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at .

The winners of all five VVSD middle schools will face off to see who will come out as the district’s top speller. That includes reigning district champ James Zahorick, an eighth-grader at Lukancic and recent winner of his school's spelling bee. He will take on Brooks eighth-grader Lajju Sudhaker, who finished second in last year’s district spelling bee, and last year’s third-place winner, Humphrey seventh-grader Campbell Bovaird. The district’s 2010 fourth-place winner, Humphrey eighth-grader Latrisse Belser, will also compete.

The students are competing for bragging rights only in the Feb. 10 spelling bee. The top speller from each campus will go on to the , slated for 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at , for the chance to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer in Washington, D.C.

Speaking of spelling bees, the winter snowstorm also forced organizers to postpone the annual . Originally set for Feb. 3, the event is now scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at the in Bolingbrook.

Local businesses and schools have assembled teams of three players to face off at the charity event, which will be broadcast on Bolingbrook Community Television.

Community members are encouraged to come out and root for their favorite team—or heckle their least favorite—at the event. Admission is free.
