Martinez Student a Winner in National Essay Contest

Joey Schultz among honorees selected from around the country.

eighth-grader Joey Schulz is being honored as one of the winners in the Stossel in the Classroom “What’s Great About America” essay contest that included entries from more than 7,500 youngsters throughout the nation.

Joey earned an honorable mention, receiving a certificate and a small cash award.

“It feels good to win,” said Joey, an avid hockey player who hopes to be a pilot some day. “I was surprised.”

“America is a great country filled with opportunity, charity, freedom and willingness for equality,” he said in the three-page essay’s conclusion. “How can America not be great with all of these positive things going with it? Our land of the free, America, is the greatest county ever.”

Stossel in the Classroom is sponsored by the Center for Independent Thought, a non-profit foundation founded by Fox Business Network host John Stossel to support a variety of educational activities and programs.
