Fifth-Grader Dreams of Being Valley View Superintendent Someday

"This job was meant for me," David Brooks wrote in an essay recently featured at a school awards assembly.

David Brooks dreams of being Superintendent of Valley View School District 365U.

The Jonas Salk Elementary School fifth-grader (soon to be sixth-grader at Humphrey Middle School) detailed his dreams in an essay that was one of several fifth grade essays featured at an awards assembly June 3 at the Bolingbrook school.

“David is gunning for my job,” said VVSD Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem as he read the essay at the assembly. Later Dr. Mitchem pinned his name badge on Brooks and said “You can start today.”

In a separate interview Dr. Mitchem said Brooks “will be a fabulous successor in 20 years. For a young lad to have his career goal in mind at such a young age, leads me to believe he would be great at the position of superintendent and accomplish all his goals.”

Brooks’ essay follows:

"At 30 my dream job is to be Valley View's Superintendent. I am willing to take responsibility for the entire district.

I am great for the job because I have good social skills. Also, I can make lots of work friends easy. I will always attempt to get along with my future workers, and I will remember I am here to do a job. Work will always come first. I know the school district needs a great superintendent and I will be that person. Also, I will always be opened minded.

Another reason I should get this job is I will put in a boatload of extra work. I will do what I need and twice more. I will take care of what needs to be done even if it is not for me to do. I will work at home, work and, if I drink coffee, then Starbucks too.

I would want this job because in the future kids education needs to be over the top. I don't want kids saying I got a C. A C means satisfactory. I want A and B's. B=good and A=excellent. I would want 90 percent of students in high school to go off to college. I will take responsibility for this district and keep them responsible, safe, ready for college, and involved. That will be my goal for students.

At 30, I want to be a superintendent. I will make district 365U run in my hands. This job was meant for me."
