“Healthcare Data in the Cloud” online webinar is March 15 with Lewis University

Dr. Ibrahim Mescioglu, assistant professor of Management Information Systems at Lewis University, will present an online webinar entitled “Healthcare Data in the Cloud” at 1 p.m. on March 15. This event is being presented by Lewis University’s Institute for Information Assurance and the Graduate School of Management. The webinar will compare several popular statistical tools and machine learning techniques used for medical research and examine the limitations of those techniques in terms of their ability to protect sensitive healthcare data in the cloud.

Privacy and security rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protect the privacy of individually identifiable health information and set national standards for the security of electronically protected health information. Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA) protects identifiable information being used to analyze patient safety events and improve patient safety. For compliance, the researchers and practitioners in the medical and pharmaceutical fields employ different techniques to protect sensitive patient information while conducting their research. Widely used approaches include removing sensitive demographics information from the datasets and using aggregated data.
