American Indian Urban Poverty is discussed during Jane Addams Forum lecture

As part of Lewis University’s Jane Addams Forum, a lecture entitled “American Indian Urban Poverty” will be delivered at 2 p.m. on March 9 in Room AS-158 located on the University’s main campus in Romeoville.

Dr. Dorene P. Wiese of White Earth Ojibwe will discuss poverty within the American Indian urban community. Wiese is the founding President of the American Indian Association of Illinois in Chicago. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and has earned an Ed.D in Leadership and Policy Studies, Adult Education from Northern Illinois University. She has more than 40 years of experience working in and developing educational programs for American Indian people who live in urban settings.

The Jane Addams Forum is named after the founder of the world famous Hull House, a community settlement house on Chicago’s near West Side that helped new and poor immigrants adjust to life in the United States. She actively supported the campaign for women’s suffrage and the founding of the American Civil Liberties Union. Addams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for her international efforts for world peace.
