Back to School: Must-Have Relationships

Tips on who to connect with during the academic year to make things go smoothly.

By now you have all the school lists going — school supplies, practice schedules and carpool contacts — to help your kids do their best at school.

But below is a must-have list for parents of the people you need to meet to help make the most of your child's upcoming school year.

  • Teacher: This one is a given and almost goes without mention. No one will have more day-to-day contact with your child than their teacher. When time permits, let their teacher know about their personality, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. The more the teacher knows  about your child, the better he or she can address your child's specific needs.
  • School counselor: According to the American School Counselor Association, parents should meet with their child’s school counselor at least three times per school year. At the beginning of the year discuss any concerns you may have about your child with them, then track their progress throughout the year. The counselor can also help evaluate your child's academic and social development, look for any special needs, and help them in a time of trouble.
  • Principal: The school principal handles everything from setting schedules, establishing school policies, to managing staff, and  they understand the importance of parental involvement. Get to know your principal by attending any meetings, orientations or open houses.
  • Health aide/nurse: If your child has any medical issues, talk to the school health aide or nurse as soon as possible. Make sure he or she has a complete understanding of your child's conditions.
  • School custodian: It's inevitable that a few times a year your child will forget something critical at school — text books for a test, snow pants heading into a snowy weekend — and you will need to make an after-hours run. Take the time to know your school's custodian and they may be able to help out in these sticky situations.
  • Their friends: Getting to know your child's friends will help you gain insight into their relationships. Remember, it is a fine line between being involved and being nosy. Find the right balance and maintain a strong presence in their life and in their friendships.
