Students Invited to Enter 'Draft-a-Bill' Contest

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors asked to submit their ideas for new legislation.

State Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, invites local ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students to participate in her annual Draft-A-Bill contest. This contest provides an opportunity for students to learn about the legislative process and research an issue of importance.

“As a former educator, I believe the Draft-A-Bill contest provides students an opportunity to learn about the legislative process and take an active role in addressing the challenges facing our state and community,” McAsey said.  “I hope that participating in this contest will inspire students to better understand and remain engaged in government.”

The Draft-A-Bill contest submissions must be made on an individual basis. Each entry requires a clear statement of a legislative idea and supporting facts. At least three supporting statements are required. The proposed legislation must be about one of the following topics: education, health care, environment & renewable energy, economic development, veterans’ affairs or public safety.
