State Rep. McAsey: 'We Can All Do Our Part to End Domestic Violence'

Local residents invited to participate in "Take Back the Night" event on Oct. 10 at the DuPage Township Levy Center in Bolingbrook.

The following article was submitted from the office of State Representative Emily McAsey:

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and state Rep. Emily McAsey is highlighting events to remind residents of those who continue to face this threat in communities across the state. McAsey, a former Will County criminal prosecutor, is a strong advocate for efforts in Springfield aimed at ending the cycle of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence has many unseen consequences, including depression, anxiety and substance abuse,” McAsey said. “I am committed to doing everything I can to put an end to domestic abuse and support its victims. By increasing penalties on repeat abusers, victims will have the protection and time they need to recover from these horrific acts.”

McAsey sponsored House Bill 958 – which was recently signed into law – to enhance penalties for repeat domestic abusers. Under McAsey’s measure, an offender with one or two prior convictions could be sentenced to a Class 4 felony punishable by one to three years in jail. An offender with three prior convictions would be charged with a Class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in jail. An offender with four or more prior convictions could be sentenced to a Class 2 felony punishable by three to seven years in jail.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, local organizations are hosting Take Back the Night events throughout Will County. These events are designed to give support to anyone in the community who has been affected by domestic abuse and educate the public on how they can help end the cycle.  Local residents can participate in a Take Back the Night event on Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. at the DuPage Township Levy Center, 251 Canterbury Dr. in Bolingbrook.

“We can all do our part to end domestic violence by recognizing abusive situations and giving victims the support they need,” McAsey said. “Participating in a Take Back the Night Event is a way to your show those suffering from domestic violence that they are not alone.”
