Romeoville Weathers Storm With Some Flooding, Road Closures

Residents saw 4 1/2 inches of rain in only a few hours.

When it rains, it pours, and in the early morning hours Thursday, the wet stuff just kept coming down in Romeoville and surrounding areas.

Village Manager Steve Gulden said the village recorded 4 1/2 inches of rain that fell between 2 and 9:30 a.m. Thursday , forcing the closing of Taylor Road at Belmont due to flooding.

Although there was standing water on several other roads in the village, Gulden said most streets remained open and passable during the early-morning rush hour, perhaps due in part to proactive measures taken by village crews.

“At 5 a.m., our public works crews were out making sure the catch basins were clear of debris,” Gulden said, adding that volunteers from the were also on hand in the early-morning hours to help direct traffic.

Several subdivisions on the northeast side of town were without power due to the storm, Gulden said, and some residents reported water in their basements.

There were also several reports of trees downed by high winds overnight.

Gulden said, overall, the village weathered the storm quite well. However, his optimism is coupled with a sense of caution as runoff from the heavy rain begins filling local ponds and streams.

“We are watching all the ponds and the Des Plaines River at the 135th Street Bridge,” Gulden said. “Our crews will be out there, as will the p, to continue to monitor the situation.”
