Romeoville Elections: Chamber Hosts Debate for Trustee, Mayoral Candidates

Event is set for Thursday, March 28.

Residents will get the chance to hear directly from Romeoville trustee and mayoral candidates during a March 28 debate at Lukancic Middle School, 725 W. Normantown Rd.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the debate will begin at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Scott Slocum of WJOL will be moderating, and a panel of local reporters will be asking the questions.

All six Romeoville trustee candidates have confirmed they will be attending the event, according to Anthony Hamilton of the Romeoville Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. Mayor John Noak has also signed on for the debate, but his opponent had not yet responded, Hamilton said Monday.

Last week, Noak challenged Steve "Mongo" McMichael to a face-to-face debate. While McMichael told Patch his campaign was considering taking part in a debate, he seemed less enthusiastic in an interview with The Herald-News, telling the newspaper, “It would be boring to let him challenge what I have to say ... I’m not interested in listening to him. I’m interested in talking to the people of Romeoville.”

"It would be boring to let him challenge what I have to say".
Hmm, disagree with me and I will just tune you out. Perfect mayoral material. Heck, he should run for higher office like governor.

Hey Mongo, in the January 9th article titled Trustee Says McMichael Broke Election Law, it quotes you saying "I'm an American, not an Ameri-can't". Does that mean you Ameri-wont debate Noak?
Mark Ballard March 18, 2013 at 03:47 pm
To you Noak supporters, i will have you know your Prince charming is in the streets taring up Steves signs, calling his police and code enforcement, taking them away from more important work to keep Steve from putting up his permitted sign's, and having his town working personnel, drive by and snatch them out of the ground and slice them up with knives. HMMM does that sound like a confident Mayor, sounds more to me like, a thief in distress. Just ask some of the Police officers you may know, infact ask his town Manager Mr. Golden. Mr Noak has numerouse complaints against him by home owners for putting his signs in yards with Steve's without permission, heck one home owner ran out in his underware screaming at Mr. Griffin and Noak for pulling Steve's signs and placing his on Steve's supports without permission. Now what does that say about Noak's integrity. If you think he would not skim from the millions he has wasted in our Village dollars, but will stoop so low as to personally take part in vandalizing Steve's sign's, then some of us are true Hicks. What a shame.
Mark Ballard March 18, 2013 at 04:07 pm
First let me say, i do not have no hidden name as my sign, my name is Mark Ballard, i am a Steve supporter with no hang up's. I do on the other hand have many hang up's with Noak. He is not truthful what so ever, he is telling people that the Spatan square project is 8 million, not, he was given sound Engineering documentation proving that project is an in the gate failure, it will lose $500,000 a year for at least the first 5 years, it will never be successful solo as an entity, therefore, will have to rely on other sources to be encorperated into it which will then cost mre millions in tax dollars, boy Noak your sure good at spending, but can only give back to us a measley $20 tax break, you are a joke. You tell our people you created 4000 jobs, but leave out that less than 7% is our residents, over 90 new companies, sad that they approached us for the cheap space, not that you drew them here with your heroism. How about some truth. i would like to know why if your from Ohio and stated your career there did you wind up at a small home town like Romeoville. You work like a thief in the night swendaling and conning what you can leaving us to deal with your garbage as you plan to move on to your next step in politics. We need someone who wants to love our town and our people like Steve. Steve has given so much of his life to charities and has such a great respect for life in general, his reach and ability towers you. Everyone doubted Swartzenager to, but who's talking crap now
Mark Ballard March 18, 2013 at 04:30 pm
What i find extremely funny, but i have to say i admire his outrageous stradegy, is how Noak is so crooked that he has placed moles in Steve's campaign, hell he tried to recruit his closest friend, Stavro. I want you all to know, this was the final nail in the coufin for me, anyone who is confident in what they have done, would never pull the stunts and low down dirty tricks Noak is doing. One of Steve's campaign members suggested he do the same, and Steve walked him to the door and said "i am sorry, though i do thank you for your efforts, i do owe my honesty to the residents of Romeoville, and hold a greater integrity than to insult them to the point to emply that they do not have enough common sense to see for them selves, driving around town, that my signs, and my signs alone are being vandalized by Noak and his little euntorage. I will say to the People of Romeoville that Steve is not a loud mouth quick crap talking tipical politician, but that is a good thing. I was standing next to Noak and Richards while they were lying about Steve to a resident and oneof those comments was "he has no experience in politics. My heart was warm and fuzzy when the home owner looked Noak straight in the face and said "thats great then he wont be good at steeling from us and slamed the door in his face. I am on the Steve sign team, i see Noak at work with low down dirty tricks. he waits for us to drop a sign and goe's to the door and tells nothing but lies. is that confidence, i think not

Let me start by saying that at least you admit you are on Mongo's payroll.
Now onto your miss interpretations and lies. The study you refer to does not say that facility will lose $500,000 a year. And this has been explained many many many times over to the public. The debt service is covered from the TIF (which is NOT your property tax dollars) it is a separate Economic Development fund set up for exactly this type of project. Next the study is broad based and discusses what MIGHT be the costs (not loss) of operating the facility if it were not covered by a private operational group and the TIF District. BTW, ALL government and park district facilities are subsidized EVERYWHERE! You simply have no idea what you are even reading. That is why the facility is being setup the way it is so that the taxpayers are not at risk. The facility was never designed to be a big money maker (no government facilities are - THAT'S WHY THEY ARE GOVERNMENT FACILITIES). Rather the facility is designed to bring in hundreds of thousands of participants a year to the area for economic development (BTW that is also in the same report). This was all explained and analyzed for the last 10 YEARS by multiple committees, consultants, residents, business owners, etc. The only ones that weren't a part of the planning were you and MONGO! You and he were no where to be seen. Nor did he ever speak publicly at a meeting about the project. A pattern seems to be emerging on that topic.
James Smith March 18, 2013 at 04:38 pm
Another area where you are completely off base is on the jobs and businesses. The jobs can't be analyzed in that way as the population is always shifting. Also, a workforces does not exist in a vacuum new jobs are just that. No one claimed every job was automatically someone in Romeoville, It is illegal to even try and require such a thing. But more total jobs means more people going to the restaurants, shops, gas stations, buying homes, etc. etc. etc. etc. All that means great things for the local economy. And when opening occur that means there are more chances for jobs in town for residents. That's why it is a good thing when new jobs come to the entire area. Would you like it if Bolingbrook and Joliet said you had to live there to work for one of their companies? The answers is NO.
James Smith March 18, 2013 at 04:42 pm
How anyone can believe anything Mongo's camp says is beyond me. If your not willing to debate then how can you be trusted?
Perfect example of your lies that you like to spread. You claim the mayor is from Ohio. First who cares if he were. Secondly it is a complete lie. The mayor grew up right here in Will County, Illinois. Went to college here in Illinois. Has family that lives right here in Romeoville, Illinois. In fact, four generations of his family has live in Will County, Illinois. You just can't help but spread lies can you?
James Smith March 18, 2013 at 04:44 pm
To Mark B:
You continue to make unfounded claim after claim. How about all those illegal Mongo signs in the public right away along Weber Rd. Was that you in the Mongo van I saw driving by yesterday placing illegal signs?
James Smith March 18, 2013 at 04:46 pm
To Mark B:
What proof do you have that the mayor has "skim" 'ed from the millions? I hope the mayor sues you now that you have used your real name. Claims like that without proof are dangerous. But you don't seem to care if there is any truth to what you tell people.
James Smith March 18, 2013 at 04:52 pm
Did Gail write that for you Mark? You know none of that is true. This is the same type of tactics you tried to use four years ago and they were lies then too. You had John G.'s fake paper pushing stories that never turned out to be true. Just like your stories now. Hey Mark did you get tossed out of Village Hall by the police recently?

We support Mayor Noak because he knows what he is doing in economic and government plateaus. In this economy to create this many jobs and bring in business is an incredible feat. Not one other town in Will County can say the same. And it did not take a celebrity name to do it. Not to mention the coming to fruition of the downtown redevelopment. I would certainly love to have a grocer on this side of town, but this is not the primary responsibility of the governing bodies. We have to have a reason for them to want to build on this side of Romeoville and a complex that will draw people to the area will do just this. It may take a while and I hope there are already studies being done on 53 by potential businesses. (As long as they are not all liquor stores and bars. We have enough.) Look at the existing businesses now. They will profit wonderfully by the traffic that will be generated as long as they advertise appropriately.
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:11 am
If there are not as many of our residents filling these jobs within all of the warehouses that have been built then we need to look at the logistics of why. Is it a matter of training and being qualified for the positions? I worked in Bolingbrook and approximately 80% of our personnel came from the city, some as far away as Indiana. This is not a quick trip, but we paid very well to get just the right people. This is what businesses do. It cost a company around $6,000.00 to $9,000.00 to train their people so they are very particular on who gets these jobs. The point to this is that the jobs are here. The next step is to work with the businesses to hire Romeoville people.
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:22 am
When all is said and done at the end of the day, I have to support those in leadership that I believe in and I guess everyone else does too. Do we rely on celebrity status or those who are truly invested in this community? I am very disheartened by all of the disparaging comments that I have been reading on all of the posts. I would like to think as proud residents of Romeoville we would be able to have actual adult debates and conversations without of the unfounded accusations being slung, but I suppose that is politics as usual. We can do better.
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:52 am
To Mark Ballard – I do not know who you are or why you are so against the current administration, but I do have questions for you as you are the one throwing out the accusations. To me this is a serious conversation so only respond with polite answers please. Your postings are in quotes.
1. “To you Noak supporters, i will have you know your Prince charming is in the streets taring up Steves signs, calling his police and code enforcement, taking them away from more important work to keep Steve from putting up his permitted sign's, and having his town working personnel, drive by and snatch them out of the ground and slice them up with knives” - Everyone has a camera or video capabilities on their phones. Please provide proof via YouTube.
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:52 am
2. “Mr Noak has numerouse complaints against him by home owners for putting his signs in yards with Steve's without permission, heck one home owner ran out in his underware screaming at Mr. Griffin and Noak for pulling Steve's signs and placing his on Steve's supports without permission.”- Again, please provide proof via police/election board reports. If the resident was so upset they should have done this.
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:53 am
3. “If you think he would not skim from the millions he has wasted in our Village dollars, but will stoop so low as to personally take part in vandalizing Steve's sign's, then some of us are true Hicks. What a shame.” – Provide one shred of evidence to this statement via the State’s attorney’s office, county election board, etc…
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:53 am
4. “Noak is so crooked that he has placed moles in Steve's campaign, hell he tried to recruit his closest friend, Stavro.” – Please name the time and place this occurred with documentation.
5. “I was standing next to Noak and Richards while they were lying about Steve to a resident and oneof those comments was "he has no experience in politics. My heart was warm and fuzzy when the home owner looked Noak straight in the face and said "thats great then he wont be good at steeling from us and slamed the door in his face.” - If you are on Mongo’s side, why were you with John and Dave while they were campaigning?
Toni March 19, 2013 at 01:54 am
Finally, this is not an insult, just a friendly FYI. If you want to be taken seriously and lend credibility to your candidates race, please use spell check and quit with the insults. Quick trick, write your manifestos in Word and then copy and paste.

so i have read all the comments on here and come to this conclusion everybody is very concered who wins the Mayoral Race for Romeoville and rightly so what everybody falls to see is iit is a win win race for mayor, if Noak wins he's a great choice and will keep doing the great job he has done for yrs and if McMichael wins he will keep things rolling that the united party put into place plus build on that as well, so the choice is clear 2 great family men with different ways and views but same goals to make Romeoville a great place to live and be proud to say thats where i am from and it is great to be in a democratic nation where you can have the freedom to run for mayor with no Dictatorship. so on April 9th vote for the person you like and April 10 you will keep on course with Noak or set a new course and adventure with Steve Mongo McMichael
