Mayor John Noak highlighted successes of the past year and what's ahead in 2014 at last week's State of the Village luncheon.

It's been a busy year in the Village of Romeoville.

Mayor John Noak highlighted some of the biggest accomplishments of 2013 and what's ahead in 2014 at the March 6 State of the Village luncheon at Lewis University.

Noak said 85 new businesses opened in the village in the last year, bringing an estimated 1,500 jobs to town. That includes the eagerly anticipated Sam's Club, which opened in the fall.

One of the biggest accomplishments of the year is the Athletic and Events Center in the Uptown Square development. The events center, 55 Phelps Ave., is slated to host a Nike youth basketball tournament next month.

Noak said that event will bring 370  teams to town, creating the need for an estimated 1,500 hotel rooms.

Organizers also recently announced that the events center will host the inaugural Chicago Beer Rally, an event dedicated to showcasing are craft brewers, on May 3.

Just across from the Athletic and Events Center will be a 9,000-square-foot retail center, which will include a Fraconi's Grocery and a relocated Fat Ricky's restaurant.

Another major commercial development is the more than 400,000-square-foot Valspar paint warehouse, set to open at 1160 Crossroads Parkway. Noak said the paint company is in the process of moving in.

An Ashley furniture store and distribution center will also open in 2014. Noak said it's the village's first furniture store. In addition a full showroom, the location will also serve as the retailer's distribution center for the entire region, he said.

Other new businesses opening their doors in 2014 will include a TJ Maxx, Chipotle, Dunkin Donuts and Sleepy's mattress store in the Shops of Romeoville, 375 S. Weber Road. A Goodwill store is also slated to open near the Aldi store at Airport and Taylor roads.

"I am proud of what we have accomplished in 2013. We are fortunate to have a group of dedicated professionals that work hard to attract quality developments," Noak said. "Romeoville has come a long way in the last few years. I am excited and optimistic about our future opportunities."

Apartment developments in the works

In addition to new businesses, some new housing developments could come to Romeoville.

A 220-unit high-end complex has been proposed for Normantown Road east of Brunswick lane. Wisconsin-based Continental Properties, which built the Springs at 127th complex in Plainfield, is proposing 11 buildings with 20 units each at the site.

Noak said the development will be aimed at young professionals, with a proposal that calls for amenities such as a fitness center, outdoor pool and dog park area.

A much smaller, 46-unit development is also proposed to be built near the BMO Harris Bank at Weber Road and High Point Drive. That development, known as Celtic Apartments, would include one four-story, 30-unit building and a three-story, 16-unit building.
