Ordinance Outlines New Staffing Structure at Romeoville Fire Department

Changes add two full-time battalion chiefs, create rank for part-time captain and candidates.

In September, village trustees to the . On Wednesday, the village made the staffing changes official by amending a village ordinance that outlines the department's staffing ranks.

“This is a continuation of our reorganization of firefighters,” Chief Kent Adams said Wednesday, adding that under the restructuring, two part-time positions became full time.

The changes also add the position of captain to the part-time ranks, along with creating a rank for candidates, or probationary firefighters/EMTs.

“It recognizes that [position] more formally,” Adams said.

Under the amended ordinance, the following full-time positions are authorized:

  • Fire chief
  • Deputy chief
  • Assistant chief
  • Battalion chief
  • Captain
  • Lieutenant
  • Firefighter/paramedic
  • Candidate probationary firefighter/paramedic)

Part-time positions are as follows:

  • Battalion chief
  • Captain
  • Lieutenant
  • Firefighter/paramedic
  • Firefighter/EMT
  • Candidate (probationary firefighter/paramedic or probationary fìrefighter/EMT)

In April, the village board signed off on a  that set aside an additional $5.2 million for fire department operations, including $226,000 for two new battalion chiefs.

Village OKs emergency repairs

Trustees also agreed to waive the bidding process and hire a Channahon-based company to perform $20,822 worth of emergency repairs to a fire department ladder truck.

“This vehicle, unfortunately, has had some tough times,” Adams told trustees. “Unfortunately, it’s an emergency repair to get the ladder truck on the street.”

The contract was awarded to Equipment Management Company.

“We’re trying to get every little bit out of the equipment that we have as we can,” Mayor John Noak said.
