Submitted by the Will County Clerk:

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots is reminding new political party and independent candidates who will be filing petitions for the November 4, 2014 General Election, that the first day to file is Monday, June 16, at 8:30 a.m., in the County Clerk’s Office, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet. The deadline for filing is 5 p.m. Monday, June 23.

Candidates for the same office filing simultaneously at 8:30 a.m. on June 16, or within the last hour (between 4 and 5 p.m.) on June 23, will be included in a lottery to determine ballot position, which will be held on July 1. Any petitions received in the first mail delivery of the first day are also included in the lottery drawing.  Candidates who file after 8:30 a.m. on the first day shall be deemed filed in the order of actual receipt.  Petitions received by mail before the first day to file, June 16, will be returned.

Petitions will be accepted for new party candidates and independent candidates for the following offices: County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Sheriff and Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools (one for each office, four-year terms); along with County Board Districts 2, 5, 9 and 11 (two members for each district, four-year terms)  and also for three Trustees (four-year terms) in the East Joliet Sanitary District and one Trustee (four-year term) in the Lockport Heights Sanitary District.

Public Act 97-681 effective March 30, 2012 amends 10ILCS 5/7-43 stating that a person who files a Statement of Candidacy as a candidate or voted a ballot for an established political party candidate at a General Primary Election may not file a statement of candidacy as an independent or a different established party’s candidate at the immediately following General Election.  New political party candidates must file a complete slate for County Offices.
