Former Joliet City Manager Named Circuit Court Judge

Thomas Thanas was chosen by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill the interim vacancy created by Judge Richard Siegel's retirement.

Former Joliet City Manager Thomas Thanas will have a new job come Jan. 1: Will County circuit judge.

The Illinois Supreme Court announced his nearly yearlong appointment in a decision made public Thursday by Supreme Court Clerk Carolyn Taft Grosboll.

Thanas is filling the vacancy created with the retirement of Circuit Judge Richard Siegel, whose last day is Dec. 31. He will hold the seat until Dec. 1, 2014, at which point the person elected to the position will assume the job.

Thanas said Thursday he will not seek election to the job.

Thanas was Joliet's city manager for five years. He stepped down from the post in November and was succeeded by Jim Hock.

Thanas served as a Will County circuit judge for a brief time in 2001 but did not win election to the seat on a permanent basis.
