Firefighters' Union, Village OK Staffing Deal

Department slated to hire three battalion chiefs, three lieutenants.

Two part-time firefighters will get a promotion under a modified agreement between the and the Romeoville Professional Fire Fighters Union.

The pact signed on Wednesday replaces an October 2010 agreement that stipulated that the village promote one full-time firefighter when filling the new battalion chief positions.

Instead, the positions will be filled by two current part-time firefighters and one of the village’s existing assistant fire chiefs, according to Village Manager Steve Gulden. Both the union, represented by Fire Chief Kent Adams, and the village agreed to the deal.

Last spring, the village board signed off on a that set aside an additional $5.2 million for fire department operations, including $226,000 for two new battalion chiefs.

Also included in the budget was funding for three new lieutenants. Those positions were approved Wednesday. According to village documents, the testing process for the lieutenant positions will now begin.
